Gunton's thesis is that the doctrine of the Trinity, specifically in the concept of perichoresis, sheds light on the relational nature of all created reality and can serve as a conceptual model for the restoration of fragmented modern culture. In the perichoretic maintenance-in-tension of the one God and the three Persons, we find a model for a balanced integration of truth, goodness, and beauty in culture that is both unified and particular, coherent and true to diversity. As Gunton puts it (177): "But just as a unitarily conceived ultimate reality encourages fragmentation [reviewer note: i.e., by right, rebellious insistence on the reality and value of the particular], so by contrast a God conceived trinitarianly, a God who contains within himself a form of plurality in relation and creates a world which reflects the richness of his being, can surely enable us better to conceive something of the unity in variety of human culture."
The book is in 8 chapters (originally lectures), arranged, as Gunton notes explicitly (e.g., 130), chiastically: the problems described in chap.1 are resolved in chap. 8; the problems of chap. 2 are resolved in chap. 7; etc.

The Particular as Relationality

Gunton's thesis is that Modernity plays the one and many against each other (6). Antiquity and modernity are alike in having defective accounts of relationality. Third, the fragmentation of the three transcendentals (begun with Plato) makes the modern world an uneasy world. Understanding that modernity is difficult to define, Gunton sees it as a family of dogmas best represented in the French and Russian Revolutions. What modernity gives us is "displacement," shifting transcendentals from God to the world (or something like it).

Yet this book is not merely a screed against modernity. Modernity is best seen as parasitic upon and in reaction to the ancient Christian tradition. Indeed, some moments of modernity, while wrong, could not have gotten off of the ground if not for ambiguities in the Christian tradition (e.g., a privileging of Plato, etc).

Gunton uses Parmenides and Heraclitus as two symbols of dealing with the problem of One and Many. Gunton calls these two approaches “a coincidence of opposites” (18). Without the mediation of a third factor they collapse into each other. The ancient Western tradition *tended* to favor monism over dualism (there were exceptions). Gunton suggests this could be due to substance-metaphysics, that the real substance of God is what lies beneath and behind the persons (191).

The early Christian tradition, by contrast, provided a model for overcoming this--best seen in Irenaeus. ecapitulation gives time itself validity before eternity (von Balthasar, quoted in Gunton 159). It gives us a conception of God’s acting in and through the world which is diversified within fundamental unity: wordly happening is now diversified and open because it is embraced by eternity. Economy embraces the being of the world in its relation to God and the action of God in relation to the world. The economy is the way God constitutes reality. He makes it what it is through the activities we call creation and redemption.

In conclusion the substantiality of God should not reside in an abstract being, but in concrete particulars that we call divine persons and in the relations in which they mutually constitute one another (191). Gunton has some beautiful meditations and suggestions on spirit and perichoresis, but I must note a few criticisms:

* I feel uneasy about his saying the Persons of the Trinity constitute each other by relations. There is a truth, there, but the statement is misleading. I repeat Volf's criticism of Zizioulas: Zizioulas distinguishes between being constituted (the Son and the Spirit through the Father) and the Father being conditioned (The Father by the Son and the Spirit). If one presumes that the Father alone is the constituitive entity within the Godhead, then, as we have already seen, it is difficult not to ascribe priority to the person before the communion. If, on the other hand, one takes seriously the notion of the Father as conditioned by the Son and the Spirit, then the differences between the persons risk being leveled. If the Father is conditioned by the Son and the Spirit, then he is constituted by them. That is, he is God only as Father. As soon as one allows innertrinitarian reciprocity, the innertrinitarian asymmetry seems to vanish (After Our Likeness, 80).

In short, whatever their genius, I don't think the Cappadocians can fully deliver by themselves.

* He suggests we should see Ideas in Coleridge's sense as the transcendental that unites One and Many. Maybe so, but this tends to move the discussion back to priority of the One.

* I agree with all of Gunton's criticisms of Augustine, yet after a while we see increasingly few citations of Augustine following criticisms of Augustine.

Speaking as a British theologian to the English academic community, Gunton exhibits considerable erudition along with concern about the disintegration of traditional Christianized culture into what he calls "modernism" and "postmodernism." His analysis of the cultural shift reaches back to pre-Christian philosophy, from Idealism to the reality of relationships. The book is not an easy read, but for those who want to think about the course of the American culture, it is informative and stimulating.

I really liked it, however

I read this whole series... I really liked it, however, I could not give it five stars. I went to look at her other books and realized she is a "chapter" book writer and each "chapter" is $2.99 each and I have seen some authors with more than a dozen "chapters" I am not paying that much to read a book not to mention the time you have to wait in between chapters. I guess it is a way to sell more books and make more money. This series alone would have cost $38 which is ridiculous (in my opinion). I have been running across these authors who write "chapter" books like this series.... a lot lately.... the first one I stopped reading when I realized there was close to 30 and more to come. I was able to read this complete series in another chapter book author's latest chapter. The only reason I read this other author's chapter books is because her books are on Kindle Unlimited. None of this author's books are KU which means I will not be reading anymore of her books unless it is a bonus in another book. As I stated it was very good but not worth $38. For this reason I am only giving 4 stars.

Great Read, minues the price

I read this entire series in a box set that featured multiple authors that was available via KU. The story was excellent! It was well thought out and well executed. The writing style was strong even with the few errors it had, the characters were well developed and believable, and the storyline made sense. With that said ... I am glad I read it via KU, because no way I would have paid $2.99 per part for the total of 13 parts. The 13 parts altogether equal up to approximately the length of 4 novels, and while these are good, if I look at it from a novel standpoint, they aren't worth $10 each, sorry.

I really enjoyed this series. Each couple's story and their fight against Club Alpha was well told. I just don't have the patience to wait so much time before the next book came out, in addition to trying to keep up with the number of books after 10! Another author is on book 26 and I will never again read anything from her. Kelly Favor is a good write, I just think she needs a good proofreader.

About the Author
Konrad B. Krauskopf was born and raised in Madison, Wisconsin and earned a B.S. in chemistry from University of Wisconsin in 1931. He then earned a Ph.D. in chemistry at the University of California in Berkeley. When the Great Depression made jobs in chemistry scarce, Professor Krauskopf decided to study geology, which had long fascinated him. Through additional graduate work at Stanford University, he earned a second Ph.D. and eventually a position on the Stanford faculty. He remained at Stanford until his retirement in 1976. During his tenure, Professor Krauskopf also worked at various times with the U.S. Geological Survey, served with the U.S. army in occupied Japan, and traveled to Norway, France, and Germany on sabbatical leaves. His research interests included field work on granites and metamorphic rocks and laboratory study on applications of chemistry to geologic problems, especially the formation of ore deposits. In recent years, Professor Krauskopf had spent time working with various government agencies on the problem of radioactive waste disposal.

A great college textbook

This was a great college textbook which covered a broad range of topics. It is broken up into logical chapters and presents the information in an easy to follow format. Plus I made an A in the class!

Textbook Rental

The product was in great shape. I am renting this text book and it is in excellent shape. The price was great for a rental. A Must Read For Business Enthusiast

What I Liked
Just like the other book I have purchased together with this one this book will be a great help to your dental business or any other typical business. The content of this book tackles about falling and striving to get back from where you have started. The author also states on putting up a business at an age that for others seem to be difficult and impossible. The book teaches to use your experiences to apply on the path you are taking. I think this book is based with the author's personal experience.

This is a little expensive than the other book upon comparing them, I think this is in paper back unlike the other one that is in hard cover but other than that I like this book same goes with the other book.

I bought this book together with the other one that deals also with dental business, but in this book you will be able to read not just for dental profession but also to other profession you are into. This book tell everything on a business side, good ones, difficult ones even ugly ones. Very impressive since you will be able to know that you don't need to spend over on a marketing or ads. Should be considered required reading for all lawyers

Had Locked Down: Information Security for Lawyers not been published by the American Bar Association (ABA) and 2 of its 3 authors not been attorneys; one would have thought the book is a reproach against attorneys for their obliviousness towards information security and privacy. In numerous places, the book notes that lawyers are often clueless when it comes to digital security.

With that, the book is a long-overdue and valuable information security reference for anyone, not just lawyers.

Such a title is needed as the legal field has embraced digital technology for nearly every aspect of the legal field, has magazines and conferences about legal technology and much more. Wireless (often insecure) networks are pervasive in corporate offices throughout legal America.

The underlying problem is that while attorneys often know the intricacies of tort law, court proceedings and the like; they are utterly unaware of the information security and privacy risks surrounding the very technologies they are using. In many firms, the lawyers think that someone is protecting their data, but don't understand their requirements around those areas of data protection.

Legal IT systems are a treasure trove of personal data. Many small law firms are extremely attractive to identity thieves gives their systems have significant amount of personal information via social security numbers, credit card information, birth dates, financial information and much more. Small law firms are notorious for weak information security controls and attackers will scan those systems and networks for vulnerabilities.

A pervasive aspect of the book is ABA rule 1.6 regarding the confidentiality of information regarding client-lawyer relationships. The rule requires that a lawyer not reveal information relating to the representation of a client unless the client gives informed consent. The lawyer though can reveal information relating to the representation of a client to the extent the lawyer reasonably believes necessary. The myriad details of 1.6 can be left to the bar association to enforce, suffice to say that a lawyer can find themselves on the wrong side of the law if they are not careful with information security controls.

The authors note that although lawyers are all well aware of rule 1.6, the challenge is how to keep client data secure in the digital age. In a world of paper, things were much easier and cheaper This is why the authors note that so many otherwise competent layers fails so miserably in reference to their duty to maintain the confidentiality of digital client data.

The book quotes an ABA 2011 technology survey in which 21% of large law firms reported that their firm had experiences some sort of security breach, and 15% of all firms reported that they suffered a security breach. It is figures like those which show that attorneys really need to read this book and take the information to heart.

The books 17 chapters are in a readable 150 pages, with an additional 120 pages of appendices. Written in an easily understandable style and non-technical for the technologically challenge lawyer.

When it comes to the security of client data, in chapter 4 the authors write that encryption is a topic that most attorneys don't want to touch with a ten-foot pole. But it has reached a point where attorneys must understand how and when encryption should be used. Just as important, they need to know about key managements, and what good encryption is. The chapter provides a high-level detail on what needs to be done regarding encryption.

Chapter 13 is on secure disposal, is an important topic to everyone, and not just lawyers. Digital media needs to be effectively disposed of; and for many lawyers, they often think that means reformatting a hard drive or simply erasing files. The chapter effectively details the issues and offers numerous valuable hardware and software-based solutions.

Chapter 14 on outsourcing and cloud computing is an area where too many attorneys are oblivious to of the security and privacy risks. For example, the authors advise attorneys against the use of the free Gmail service since the terms of service allow Google to do anything it wants with the data. That opens a Pandora's Box when it comes to securing client data. The authors advise to use premium Google business versions, so attorneys can stay in control of their data with added security and privacy features.

Two omissions in chapters 13 and 14 are that the authors don't reference NAID (National Association for Information Destruction) or the CSA (Cloud Security Alliance (CSA).

Firms that outsource their digital disposal to non-NAID certified firms run the risk of having a glorified recycler do their work. As to NAID, it is an international trade association for companies providing information destruction services. NAID's mission is to promote the information destruction industry and the standards and ethics of its member companies; while the mission of the CSA is to promote the use of best practices for providing security assurance within cloud computing and to provide education on the uses of cloud computing to help secure all other forms of computing.

The authors include many real-world stories and case law to reinforce their point.

The book closes with a number of appendices on various rules from the FTC, state information protection regulations, the SANS Institute glossary of security terms and more.

For the lawyer looking for an easy to read introduction to nearly everything they need to know about information security and privacy, the book is a great resource.

The book closes with the note that since lawyers have an ethical duty to protect their client's data, they have no choice but to keep themselves as well educated as possible.

Wish I could give it zero or negative stars.

I paid over $50 for this book in September 2012. It was delivered May 7, 2013. I anticipated the delivery eagerly. I could not be more disappointed.

The vast majority of the book is a series of Appendices which are nothing more than Xeroxed boilerplate from the public domain. Chapter 18 is nothing but a list, mainly of websites and RSS feeds.

This book is totally worthless and is a gross breach of the Warranty of Merchantability. I cannot send it back fast enough.

An Excellent Look at a Sadly Overlooked Coup

"Pretext for Mass Murder" is an impressive overview of the complicated events behind the 1965-1966 coup in which pro-U.S. General Suharto seized power and began a three decade reign of terror. Roosa worked with a group of Indonesian scholars on interviews and other historical research which produced core material for this book. Though in the end Roosa concludes that a few members of the Indonesian communist party (PKI), by launching an ill-conceived anti-military action, did provide the provocation which rightist military forces and the U.S. had been waiting for in 1965, the foolhardy actions of those individual PKI members do not in any way absolve Suharto and his western backers for what consequently happened (an epic campaign of bloodletting which eviscerated the PKI and killed up to a million Indonesians).

In Roosa's words: "In the months before October, the United States and the army wanted an incident like the movement to occur[...] Eisenhower and the Dulles brothers - Allen at the head of the CIA and John Foster at the head of the State Department - viewed all nationalist Third World leaders who wished to remain neutral in the cold war as Communist stooges. In full confidence of their right to handpick the leaders of foreign countries, Eisenhower and the Dulleses repeatedly used CIA covert operations to overthrow such leaders: Mossadegh in Iran in 1953, Arbenz in Guatemala in 1954, and Souvanna Phouma in Laos in 1960. The Dulles brothers viewed Sukarno as yet another irritating character who needed to be removed from the world stage."

The book effectively synthesizes a wealth of information and is extremely well written, and thankfully devoid of the clunky jargon which sinks so many otherwise useful academic volumes.

A remarkable forensic history.

The botched coup of October 1, 1965 marked the demise of President Sukarno and the emergent politicide of a social movement. Roosa untangles the complexities of this event with sharp analytics and oral history scholarship. Much more than an eerie historical analysis, Roosa creates a captivating narrative that reads like a detective novel.

Academics have long debated "what really happened" on October 1st, when a group of mid-ranking military officers led a botched purge of suspected anti-Sukarno generals. A comedy of errors followed. Announcing itself over the airwaves as the "September 30 Movement" (G-30-S) from a captured center of Jakarta, the group was routed by nightfall. Under General Suharto, the emerging military leadership pinned the episode on the Indonesian Communist Party (PKI), granting the pretext for an extermination of Indonesian leftists.

This book transparently assembles an updated narrative with logical prowess. Roosa shine in his sharp interrogation of past sources, reconciling prior insights with new sources and testimonies. Using a surprising new document from a key coup insider, together with fresh insights from survivors, Roosa brings the events into focus. Importantly, this work comes closest to understanding the extent of PKI's involvement in the events; tragically, it seems PKI was implicated by the secretive, cavalier actions of party insiders.

The Pretext for Mass Murder is a successful historical analysis. While intensive and specific, it is a surprisingly readable work on a mysterious episode in Indonesian history. A remarkable read for those interested in Indonesian history and the practice of oral history.

A closure to a much debated episode of the Indonesian history

This book provides closure to this dark episode of the Indonesian history. Neither supportive of the Suharto propaganda, nor pandering to conspiracy theorists (that Suharto himself masterminded a coup destined to fail), it is a balanced discussion on the 30th September Movement based on key new evidence available in the 2000s. The book is structured from the picture of the movement itself and how it implodes, to the role of the Special Bureau and the PKI, and finally to the bigger picture of how the movement fits into a global conflict of communism vs. the west.

There are interesting sub-conflicts on which the book only implies. First, between the Sukarnoists and anti-Sukarnoists and how the army/Suharto pretended at the beginning to be Sukarnoist, only to suppress not only PKI but also all other Sukarnoist organizations. It is worth noting that even the nationalist party, the PNI, was also subjected to the repression. Eventually, all the service branches, including the army suffered from Suharto's purges. The other sub-conflict was between the two wanna-bes: Suharto vs. Sjam. Both shared common characteristics - secretive and relatively unknown. These served Suharto well (no one knew whether he was anti- or pro-Sukarno), but not Sjam, whose ambitions eventually destroyed the movement. In fact, cultural explanations have attempted to portray Suharto as the typical Javanese outsider who managed to unseat a king through a creeping coup (Pramoedya Ananta Toer's book on a real historical character and East Javanese king, Ken Arok, was structured along this line). However, the biggest sub-conflict in this book was between the PKI and the US Government, a conflict in which PKI was doomed to lose. While the US worked through and supplied the Indonesian army with training, information and materiel, the PKI suffered from the Moscow-Beijing split and had no access to arms. Short of an armed rebellion, the PKI's position was not tenable, despite the appearances of its gaining access to power through ministerial appointments in the cabinet.

Suharto's coup d'etat remains the smartest coup that the US has helped to engineer. I don't think any other coup has been as convoluted as it had been. The title of the book also puts this fact (a Suharto coup, not PKI) right. Such facts that the CIA supplied the army with kill lists should be made even more public. As it is, demands for the Indonesian government to apologize for the mass killings should be paired with demands for the US government to do so.

Unfortunately, despite this book (translated and freely available online in Indonesian) and other alternative publications after Suharto's downfall in 1998, the debate about the movement and the PKI is still colored and dominated by the results of 30 years of Suharto propaganda. It will take another generation, before the (current) generals realize that playing up PKI as a latent threat to the country is an outdated and silly way of bullying people. Moreover, beneficiaries of Suharto's New Order are still alive and kicking even in the current government. The former president SBY is a son-in-law of the head of the special forces in 1965-1966, which trained local militias to kill, and initiated the killings of, those suspected of being PKI or PKI sympathizers. Those who claimed to be 'student activists' in 1965, who supported the army and received funding from the CIA, are now in government as advisers to various ministers.

Finally, I would love to see someone turn this event or the book into a movie. The similarities and parallels (such as the debate of military vs. political operation, and the use of the reserve troops) to Operation Valkyrie, for one, is just too much to ignore.

Excellent academic text

I got a good sense of feminism, the history of feminist theory, and the history of art from reading this text. I will never see art history the same way. Spans a range of dates, media, artists and critics. I am an artist, not a theorist, but this book was accessible enough for me to use it to better understand my place in contemporary art practice. The extensive notes can lead you to other excellent sources for research.

I had to order this textbook at the last minute, due to my professor changing her mind once class started. Amazon was AMAZING at getting it out to me quickliy.
