After describing the profoundly humanist classical foundation of the invention of the Primavera, Dempsey identifies its genre with rustic song, then relates the painting to the conventions of vernacular love poetry. A close reading of the painting in relation to works by Lorenzo, Politian, Pulci, and other poets working to elevate vernacular expression by infusing native Tuscan with Latin forms suggests how the idea of Love portrayed by Botticelli in the form of Venus incorporates not only the ancient springtime renovatio mundi but also the actual cultural renovation--the Renaissance--imagined and sponsored by Lorenzo the Magnificent.

of music—is therefore THE MASTER CODE.
Beyond solidifying our connection to The Master Code, these Rhythm Studies will also help increase
your aptitude for and comfort with sight reading. Further, because you will incorporate your voice in
these methods, you will develop 5-way independence with 4-limbed coordination. But perhaps the
main benefit of mastering this method is the cultivation of your individual creativity. Once such a
high level of coordination is reached, you no longer need to devote as much of your mental capacity
to it, thus allowing more of your concentration to be focused on personal expression. These studies
will equip you with new potential in your continued musical development. I strongly believe that
following my method will foster a better understanding of your instrument, its possibilities, and your
role as drummer in the larger musical picture.
While your musical individualism is important, it is equally important to be able to learn parts quickly
and accommodate other musicians and producers. The better you are able to do this, the more
likely you are to succeed as a drummer in the modern music industry. By mastering the concepts of

About the Author

Gerald G. May, M.D. (1940-2005), practiced medicine and psychiatry for twenty-five years before becoming a senior fellow in contemplative theology and psychology at the Shalem Institute for Spiritual Formation in Bethesda, Maryland. He was the author of many books and articles blending spirituality and psychology, including Addiction and Grace, Care of Mind/Care of Spirit, Will and Spirit, and The Dark Night of the Soul.

Great read. Not hooked on the 12-step substance abuse world--Refreshing approach.

Didn't finish this yet. Competing priorities. The reason I give this 5 stars is that this author does not focus on substance abuse as regards addiction, but looks at it as a life situation that rules all aspects of a person's life, not just the 12 step variety of issues. This is the most honest rendition of addiction as a mental health issue I've come across and it is refreshing. Even people in medicine don't know what addiction is (MDs, nurses, you name it), but this author has it nailed in a non-judgmental easy to read and understand way. Refreshing and useful book. Also, Grace isn't connected to some orthodox religion thankfully. He speaks to Grace in its higher aspects as addiction and Grace are opposite sides of the same coin. Nicely done.

A Classic in Understanding Addictions, their Make-up, and Finding the Road Back from Them

In just over two decades this book has become a classic in understanding what addiction is, how it works, why addictions occur, the ingredients of an addiction, and what must be done in overcoming one. Dr. May talks about addictions from coffee to the other end of the spectrum. He shows us that we all have them. They do not have to be life-threatening, although many are.

As a medical doctor, he shows that addictions are not just a mental challenge that must be surmounted. There are physical, neurological and spiritual components that enter into the whole mix.

I initially bought this book in the late eighties to try to better understand the problem of alcoholism in my family. I have to say, I got what I wanted. I also got to take a better look at myself and what makes me tick.

Each reading of this is very new. However, it is also a great reference book to keep handy to help others in need. I have used it hundreds of times in this manner.

I have likened it many times to The Confessions of St. Augustine and his speaking of his own addictions. To paraphrase him, he said addictions are a perversion of any of our passions, which then get out of hand: we go from an evil, to a habit, to a compulsion and then to a necessity. At one point, he calls it the "Law of Sin," which he gets from Saint Paul's Letters to the Romans (and Galatians). He gives a great definition too! He says, "the law of sin is the fierce force of habit, by which the mind is drawn and held even against its will, and yet deservedly because it had fallen willfully into the habit" (Book 8, 5 in the Frank Sheed translation shown above).

Like Augustine, like any 12-step program, Dr. May shows that there is a dimension in recovery that is beyond ourselves. Augustine saw it as Christ, the "... Anonymous" programs see it as a Higher Power, Dr. May calls it "Grace." Because of this dimension, this is not only a helpful, but also a good spiritual read that can benefit almost anyone.

I've liked the hardcover, because it serves one well over the years. It's not a bad idea to keep a few used paperback copies around to give away. They're cheap enough! I've given away dozens of copies along the way, and will probably continue to do so.

It is not bad when it comes to the grace part

When it comes to understanding addiction, Gerald May does not truly get it. What is presented about addiction is not all factual.
In some cases he trivializes addiction. It is not bad when it comes to the grace part. I am stating these things because I am a real
recovered addict. To say if a person can quit cold turkey they are not really addicted to whatever, is not true. A person can quit cold turkey but they
may be very miserable. I may give this book to someone but would not recommend they buy it.

Lattice brings the proven design of Trellis graphics (originally developed for S by William S. Cleveland and colleagues at Bell Labs) to R, considerably expanding its capabilities in the process. Lattice is a powerful and elegant high level data visualization system that is sufficient for most everyday graphics needs, yet flexible enough to be easily extended to handle demands of cutting edge research. Written by the author of the lattice system, this book describes it in considerable depth, beginning with the essentials and systematically delving into specific low levels details as necessary. No prior experience with lattice is required to read the book, although basic familiarity with R is assumed.

The book contains close to150 figures produced with lattice. Many of the examples emphasize principles of good graphical design; almost all use real data sets that are publicly available in various R packages. All code and figures in the book are also available online, along with supplementary material covering more advanced topics.

Deepayan Sarkar won the 2004 John M. Chambers Statistical Software Award for writing lattice while he was a graduate student in Statistics at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He is currently doing postdoctoral research in the Computational Biology program at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, a member of the R Core Team, and an active participant on the R mailing lists.

Excellent book, excellent package...

Exactly the book you want if you're going to use lattice. And if you're serious about graphics in R you want to be using either lattice or ggplot2. I've been very pleased with the book and have tabbed quite a few pages for quick reference.

As a side note, lattice is like R's base graphics on steroids. After having this book for a while, I decided to investigate ggplot2, the other major R graphics package, and I think I'll stick with ggplot2. It has a totally different philosophy from lattice (and thus base graphics) which allows for an incredible flexibility without resorting to tinkering with the engine (i.e. lattice's panel functions). ggplot2 has a draft PDF manual online and a nice reference website.

I ultimately chose ggplot2, but I still give this lattice book high marks and will keep it nearby for if I have to work with lattice. With its status as a recommended R package, lattice is more widespread and several packages now use it as their graphics foundation.

Outstanding

Deepayan Sarkar won a prize for programming Lattice. He deserves another for writing this book. The usual style of help files in R (including Lattice) is terse; this is a deliberate choice by the developers. Presumably, a lot of people like this terseness - but I am not one of them, and there are many others I know of who share my confusion at some of the help files.

Now, there's a whole book on Lattice, and it's written in an accessible style that will let me use Lattice much more creatively and with many fewer errors.

I think even experts on Lattice may find new things here; but for newcomers to Lattice, it's an indispensable guide.

Very helpful

I learned far more from a few hours of reading this book than I did from countless hours tinkering with Lattice graphs. I would recommend it without hesitation to any novice or intermediate user of R.

Furthermore, while both are helpful, this book is probably a better first purchase than R Graphics (Computer Science and Data Analysis).
