Doctor Zhivago, by Boris Pasternak

Boris Pasternak’s widely acclaimed novel comes gloriously to life in a magnificent new translation by Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky, the award-winning translators of War and Peace and Anna Karenina, and to whom, The New York Review of Books declared, “the English-speaking world is indebted.”

First published in Italy in 1957 amid international controversy—the novel was banned in the Soviet Union until 1988, and Pasternak declined the Nobel Prize a year later under intense pressure from Soviet authorities—Doctor Zhivago is the story of the life and loves of a poet-physician during the turmoil of the Russian Revolution. Taking his family from Moscow to what he hopes will be shelter in the Ural Mountains, Zhivago finds himself instead embroiled in the battle between the Whites and the Reds. Set against this backdrop of cruelty and strife is Zhivago’s love for the tender and beautiful Lara: pursued, found, and lost again, Lara is the very embodiment of the pain and chaos of those cataclysmic times.

Stunningly rendered in the spirit of Pasternak’s original—resurrecting his style, rhythms, voicings, and tone—and including an introduction, textual annotations, and a translators’ note, this edition of Doctor Zhivago is destined to become the definitive English translation of our time.

Review
"The previous English-language translation of Boris Pasternak’s Doctor Zhivago was made and brought out in England and the U.S. in extreme haste, on the eve of the 1958 Nobel Prize award to its author that triggered one of the fiercest political storms of the Cold War era. This new translation by Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky is for the first time based on the authentic original text, reflects the present, deeper level of understanding of the great masterpiece of 20th century Russian literature and conveys its whole artistic richness with all its complexities and subtleties that had escaped the attention of the earlier translators and readers.

"In faithfulness to the original, attention to stylistic details and nuances, lucidity, and brilliance it matches Pevear and Volokhonsky’s superb translations of such monumental works of the classics of Russian literature as Tolstoy’s War and Peace and Dostoevsky’s The Brothers Karamazov. The new edition will have an even more profound effect on our understanding of 20th century Russia that the first appearance of the novel had more than half a century ago."
—Lazar Fleishman, Professor of Russian Literature, Stanford University

“Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky have once again provided an outstanding translation of a major Russian novel. They capture Pasternak’s ‘voice’ with great skill. Thanks to their sensitive rendering, those reading Doctor Zhivago in English can now get a far better sense of Pasternak’s style, for they have produced an English text that conveys the nuances (along with the occasional idiosyncrasies) of Pasternak’s writing. Notably as well, their version includes some phrases and sentences that inexplicably were omitted by the original translators. The text is accompanied by useful (but not overwhelming) notes in the back that provide information about many historical and cultural references that would otherwise be obscure for those coming to the novel for the first time. Without a doubt, their version will become the standard translation of the novel for years to come.”
—Barry Scherr, Mandel Family Professor of Russian, Dartmouth College

The Five O'Clock Express

1

They walked and walked and sang "Memory Eternal,"1 and when they stopped, it seemed that the song went on being repeated by their feet, the horses, the gusts of wind.

Passers-by made way for the cortège, counted the wreaths, crossed themselves.  The curious joined the procession, asked:  "Who's being buried?"  "Zhivago," came the answer.  "So that's it.  Now I see."  "Not him.  Her."  "It's all the same.  God rest her soul.  A rich funeral."

The last minutes flashed by, numbered, irrevocable.  "The earth is the Lord's and the fullness thereof; the world, and those that dwell therein."  The priest, tracing a cross, threw a handful of earth onto Marya Nikolaevna.  They sang "With the souls of the righteous."  A terrible bustle began.  The coffin was closed, nailed shut, lowered in.  A rain of clods drummed down as four shovels hastily filled the grave.  Over it a small mound rose.  A ten-year-old boy climbed onto it.

Only in the state of torpor and insensibility that usually comes at the end of a big funeral could it have seemed that the boy wanted to speak over his mother's grave.

He raised his head and looked around from that height at the autumn wastes and the domes of the monastery with an absent gaze.  His snub-nosed face became distorted.  His neck stretched out.  If a wolf cub had raised his head with such a movement, it would have been clear that he was about to howl.  Covering his face with his hands, the boy burst into sobs.  A cloud flying towards him began to lash his hands and face with the wet whips of a cold downpour.  A man in black, with narrow, tight-fitting, gathered sleeves, approached the grave.  This was the deceased woman's brother and the weeping boy's uncle, Nikolai Nikolaevich Vedenyapin, a priest defrocked at his own request.  He went up to the boy and led him out of the cemetery.

2

They spent the night in one of the monastery guest rooms, allotted to the uncle as an old acquaintance.  It was the eve of the Protection.2  The next day he and his uncle were to go far to the south, to one of the provincial capitals on the Volga, where Father Nikolai worked for a publisher who brought out a local progressive newspaper.  The train tickets had been bought, the luggage was tied up and standing in the cell.  From the nearby station the wind carried the plaintive whistling of engines maneuvering in the distance.

Towards evening it turned very cold.  The two ground-floor windows gave onto the corner of an unsightly kitchen garden surrounded by yellow acacia bushes, onto the frozen puddles of the road going past, and onto the end of the cemetery where Marya Nikolaevna had been buried that afternoon.  The kitchen garden was empty, except for a few moiré patches of cabbage, blue from the cold.  When the wind gusted, the leafless acacia bushes thrashed about as if possessed and flattened themselves to the road.

During the night Yura was awakened by a tapping at the window.  The dark cell was supernaturally lit up by a fluttering white light.  In just his nightshirt, Yura ran to the window and pressed his face to the cold glass.

Beyond the window there was no road, no cemetery, no kitchen garden.  A blizzard was raging outside, the air was smoky with snow.  One might have thought the storm noticed Yura and, knowing how frightening it was, reveled in the impression it made on him.  It whistled and howled and tried in every way possible to attract Yura's attention.  From the sky endless skeins of white cloth, turn after turn, fell on the earth, covering it in a winding sheet.   The blizzard was alone in the world, nothing rivalled it.

Yura's first impulse, when he got down from the windowsill, was to get dressed and run outside to start doing something.  He was afraid now that the monastery cabbage would be buried and never dug out, now that mama would be snowed under and would be helpless to resist going still deeper and further away from him into the ground.

Again it ended in tears.  His uncle woke up, spoke to him of Christ and comforted him, then yawned, went to the window, and fell to thinking.  They began to dress.  It was getting light.

3

While his mother was alive, Yura did not know that his father had abandoned them long ago, had gone around various towns in Siberia and abroad, carousing and debauching, and that he had long ago squandered and thrown to the winds the millions of their fortune.  Yura was always told that he was in Petersburg or at some fair, most often the one in Irbit.

But then his mother, who had always been sickly, turned out to have consumption.  She began going for treatment to the south of France or to northern Italy, where Yura twice accompanied her.  Thus, in disorder and amidst perpetual riddles, Yura spent his childhood, often in the hands of strangers, who changed all the time.  He became used to these changes, and in such eternally incoherent circumstances his father's absence did not surprise him.

As a little boy, he had still caught that time when the name he bore was applied to a host of different things.  There was the Zhivago factory, the Zhivago bank, the Zhivago buildings, a way of tying and pinning a necktie with a Zhivago tie-pin, and even some sweet, round-shaped cake, a sort of baba au rhum, called a Zhivago, and at one time in Moscow you could shout to a cabby:  "To Zhivago!" just like "To the devil's backyard!" and he would carry you off in his sleigh to a fairy-tale kingdom.  A quiet park surrounded you.  Crows landed on the hanging fir branches, shaking down hoarfrost.  Their cawing carried, loud as the crack of a tree limb.  From the new buildings beyond the clearing, pure-bred dogs came running across the road.  Lights were lit there.  Evening was falling.

Suddenly it all flew to pieces.  They were poor.

4

In the summer of 1903, Yura and his uncle were riding in a tarantass and pair over the fields to Duplyanka, the estate of Kologrivov, the silk manufacturer and great patron of the arts, to see Ivan Ivanovich Voskoboinikov, a pedagogue and popularizer of useful knowledge.

It was the feast of the Kazan Mother of God,3 the thick of the wheat harvest.  Either because it was lunchtime or on account of the feast day, there was not a soul in the fields.  The sun scorched the partly reaped strips like the half-shaven napes of prisoners.  Birds circled over the fields.  Its ears drooping, the wheat drew itself up straight in the total stillness or stood in shocks far off the road, where, if you stared long enough, it acquired the look of moving figures, as if land surveyors were walking along the edge of the horizon and taking notes.

"And these," Nikolai Nikolaevich asked Pavel, a handyman and watchman at the publishing house, who was sitting sideways on the box, stooping and crossing his legs, as a sign that he was not a regular coachman and driving was not his calling, "are these the landowner's or the peasants'?"

"Them's the master's," Pavel replied, lighting up, "and them there," having lighted up and inhaled, he jabbed with the butt of the whip handle towards the other side and said after a long pause, "them there's ours.  Gone to sleep, eh?" he scolded the horses every so often, glancing at their tails and rumps out of the corner of his eye, like an engineer watching a pressure gauge.

But the horses pulled like all horses in the world; that is, the shaft horse ran with the innate directness of an artless nature, while the outrunner seemed to the uncomprehending to be an arrant idler, who only knew how to arch its neck like a swan and do a squatting dance to the jingling of the harness bells, which its own leaps set going.

Nikolai Nikolaevich was bringing Voskoboinikov the proofs of his little book on the land question, which, in view of increased pressure from the censorship, the publisher had asked him to revise.

"Folk are acting up in the district," said Nikolai Nikolaevich.  "In the Pankovo area they cut a merchant's throat and a zemstvo man4 had his stud burned down.  What do you think of that?  What are they saying in your village?"

But it turned out that Pavel took an even darker view of things than the censor who was restraining Voskoboinikov's agrarian passions.

"What're they saying?  Folk got free and easy.  Spoiled, they say.  Can you do that with our kind?  Give our muzhiks the head, they'll crush each other, it's God's truth.  Gone to sleep, eh?"

This was the uncle and nephew's second trip to Duplyanka. Yura thought he remembered the way, and each time the fields spread out wide, with woods embracing them in front and behind in a narrow border, it seemed to Yura that he recognized the place where the road should turn right, and at the turn there would appear and after a moment vanish the seven-mile panorama of Kologrivovo, with the river glistening in the distance and the railroad running beyond it.  But he kept being mistaken.  Fields were succeeded by fields.  Again and again they were embraced by woods.  The succession of these open spaces was tuned to a vast scale.  You wanted to dream and think about the future.

Not one of the books that were later to make Nikolai Nikolaevich famous had yet been written.  But his thoughts were already defined.  He did not know how near his hour was.

Soon he was to appear among the representatives of the literature of that time, university professors and philosophers of the revolution – this man who had thought over all their themes and who, apart from terminology, had nothing in common with them.  The whole crowd of them held to some sort of dogma and contented themselves with words and appearances, but Father Nikolai was a priest who had gone through Tolstoyism and revolution5 and kept going further all the time.  He thirsted for a wingedly material thought, which would trace a distinct, unhypocritical path in its movement and would change something in the world for the better, and which would be noticeable even to a child or an ignoramus, like a flash of lightning or a roll of thunder.  He thirsted for the new.

Yura felt good with his uncle.  He resembled his mother.  He was a free spirit, as she had been, with no prejudice against anything inhabitual.  Like her, he had an aristocratic feeling of equality with all that lived.  He understood everything at first glance, just as she had, and was able to express his thoughts in the form in which they came to him at the first moment, while they were alive and had not lost their meaning.

Yura was glad that his uncle was taking him to Duplyanka.  It was very beautiful there, and the picturesqueness of the place also reminded him of his mother, who had loved nature and had often taken him on walks with her.  Besides that, Yura was pleased that he would again meet Nika Dudorov, a high-school boy who lived at Voskoboinikov's and probably despised him for being two years younger, and who, when greeting him, pulled his hand down hard and bowed his head so low that the hair fell over his forehead, covering half his face.

In Praise of Boris Pasternak and Doctor Zhivago
By Paul Frandano
Just a few words, on the outside chance that I might tip a potential reader or two into reading this marvelous oh-so-Russian novel of lives caught up in the Great October Revolution of 1917 and its aftermath. Either you read Big Russian Novels (primarily of the 19th century) or not. If you do, you've probably already read, or tried to read, Zhivago. If you don't, I can offer a few reasons why you might want to read this one, in the Pevear-Volokhonsky translation or the earlier, less literal (but reportedly more graceful and poetic) Hayward-Harari version. Pasternak's cast of principal characters are to a person layered, complex, deeply conceived individuals swept up in the massive surge of events, struggling to keep their heads above water while, all around them, friends, family, and nameless millions of others are drowning in the turbulence. The arc of Yuri Zhivago alone - from enthusiastic, humanistic supporter of "regime change" to mordant skeptic of divisive ideas imposed as orthodoxy-driven policy - is typical of the evolutions and surprises Pasternak has written into the novel. His characters ruminate far and wide over imputed glories and horrors of Marxism, Bolshevism, Soviet Communism, the New Economic Policy (NEP), etc., and it was for precisely these candid criticisms of Soviet ideology and practice that Pasternak's novel was condemned (although unpublished) in the USSR - despite the deStalinization still underway at the time of Zhivago's publication, first in Italy then around the world (Soviet readers couldn't legally purchase a USSR/Russian edition until 1988). Needless to say, Pasternak was obliged to decline the Nobel Prize for Literature he won in 1958, mostly for Doctor Zhivago.

For me - I spent most of my adult life as an analyst of foreign political, economic, social, and military affairs - Doctor Zhivago is particularly brilliant in its depiction of the horrors and dislocations war and civil war inflict on populations, and especially those segments with little or no recourse to "safety nets" of  any variety - personal, familial, governmental, church-, religion-, or community-based, or other. Pasternak depicts the range of human ingenuity in such circumstances, as individiuals cobble together the means of extracting brief moments of small pleasure from the tractor-pull of events. But through an accumulation of hundreds of small details, often in asides and parenthetic observations, Pasternak conveys the epochal common misfortunes and hardships of those whose accident of history made them Russians born around and after 1900. The novel compels us to consider that, at some point in the 20th century, such horrors of remorseless privation, despotism, and brutal inhumanity were visited upon the majority of humanity - the Europe of the World  Wars, China for most of the century, and on and on - and how  fortunate those spared such travails (and their descendents) are.

Throughout, Pasternak's characters comment on the flow of events, the political struggles, the conduct of, first, the World War and later the Civil War, the states-of-play at various key junctures, the putative winners and losers, the impositions of what must seem arbitrary policy (and then policy reversals), all in the name of advancing to some  formless Communist Utopia but, to the  cynically incisive observations of Zhivago and other perceptive observers, simply a Soviet variation of high-stakes politics of power-seeking  individuals. THIS is how depotism and deprivation of freedom looks, and it's an experience alien to most American readers and one worthy of serious contemplation. Zhivago is filled with long, philosophical digressions that in general weigh humanism and spirituality against ideological politics; many found these passages tedious and a drag on the narrative. Suffice to say, I did not. Moreover, I found even Pevear-Volokhonsky's more literal translation filled with beautifully poetic moments, as were the translations of "Yuri Zhivago's poetry" that forms an appendix to the novel.

In short, I found Doctor Zhivago a transporting literary experience and a profound reflection on Soviet Communism. And a book I will reread, soon, in the Hayward-Harari translation.

The novel itself is great though and the prose translation quite good
By readerwalker (flickr name)
This unidentifed translation of Doctor Zhivago with a cover picture from the American movie version has numerous format errors and some typos and does NOT include any of the poems. So the translation is incomplete. The novel itself is great though and the prose translation quite good, but don't bother with this bogus looking Amazon version.

Masterpiece
By Ronnie Tyler
I just finished Boris Pasternak’s novel, “Doctor Zhivago,” and I’m a bit wrecked. I had to lie down after finishing. This was a re-reading after too many years. It is one of my all-time favorites, so highest recommendation! I’d forgotten how excellent it is. I always enjoy a good nexus, and here the nexus is my love of history, especially the end of the Romanov Dynasty, Russian Revolution of 1917, and gorgeous writing. This translation is from 2014 and it is wonderful. Yes, the movie is sublime, but the book is even better. I want to run away to Siberia now. Forward my mail to Varykino.

"It’s easy to feel a sense of peace after completing Fawzia Gilani’s Cinderella. This humble version of the classic fairy tale is a gentle reminder that victory comes as much from a peaceful soul as a beautiful dress and a dramatic confrontation." - Luxury Reading

Cinderella is one of the oldest, best-known, and most loved stories worldwide, with hundreds of cultural variants and re-tellings from ancient Egypt and China to the present day. In this version we follow the trials and tribulations of the sweet, gentle, and pious Zahra when her parents die and she is left at the mercy of an uncaring stepmother and stepsisters. This is a well-crafted Islamic version of the classic tale in which faith, goodness, and prayer are rewarded in the end. The charming, richly detailed illustrations of Shireen Adams, set in medieval Andalusia, help bring the text to life.

A great Islamic AND modern version of Cinderella that everyone (even non-Muslims) can enjoy
By Anelley
I was apprehensive to get this. I didn't know what to expect as I have read some really bad Muslim kids' books. Thankfully this is so far above what I was fearing. This sets a new standard in Islamic materials for kids.

I'm a firm believer that fairy tales and nursery rhymes can be used to teach kids. But many of these tales are told traditionally and their messages and mores don't always hold up over time. Everyone knows the story of Cinderella, but there are some problematic elements to it when trying to use it teach kids today. What kid is going to understand Cinderella's action in putting up with abuse? Or the Prince just marrying whoever he meets at a dance? Or that marriage is the end goal of a woman's life?

This story takes the story we all know and updates it for the modern era with a focus on Islamic manners and attributes. But besides the Islamic vocabulary, honestly this book would be great for any faith people who believe in patience, reliance on God, and treating others kindly even when they are not kind in return. I think anyone can appreciate this story.

Moreover I love that the story is still recognizable. Gilani didn't excise parts of the story to make it fit into some "Islamic" mold. For example, I was curious how she would fit in the fairy godmother role from the most known version. Well she comes up with something that doesn't change any part of the story and still makes sense Islamically and realistically.

My daughter and I enjoyed this very much. My daughter went on to tell others about the book - they were talking about the Disney version and my daughter wanted to tell them about this version! She liked it better.

I have preordered the author's next book and can't wait to see what she does with all the stories. My only (if any) criticism would be I wish she would include more parts in the books or maybe whole books themselves to tales boys can relate to.

Highly recommended especially for children's public library multicultural picturebook collections
By Midwest Book Review
Cinderella: An Islamic Tale is a picturebook of a classic Islamic fable, retold by Fawzia Gilani. The gentle and pious Zahra's parents die, she lives a harsh life with a stepmother who cares little for her. Yet she stays true to her beliefs and her principles, and her inner goodness ultimately earns her goodness in reward. "As for the stepmother and stepsisters, when they saw how Allah had rewarded Zahra's goodness, they were filled with shame. They repented for their sins and asked for her forgiveness. And, remembering the example of the Prophet Yusuf and his brothers, Princess Zahra forgave them wholeheartedly." Simple, colorful illustrations enhance this lovely recreation of a cherished fairy tale, and the final two pages offer a glossary of Arabic terms as well as a brief footnote list of the passages from the Qur'an and Hadith referred to by the story. Cinderella: An Islamic Tale is highly recommended especially for children's public library multicultural picturebook collections.

Beautiful retelling Muslim Cinderella
By N. Abbasi
My five-year-old princess-obsessed daughter and her children's-book-obsessed Mom both LOVE this book. I am asked to read it just about each night before bed. The drawings are simple, clean and beautiful. All the characters develop nicely and there are no lose ends. A very believable and attainable tale of faith, patience, simplicity and taqwa. Highly recommended!

The Practices and Procedures for Financial Institution Risk Management manual provides a comprehensive guide to developing a risk management program. Because risk management is inherent in all aspects of financial institution products, services and functions, the regulators continue to include risk management as a top priority in their policies, guidance, and examination requirements. Financial reform places a heavy emphasis on financial institutions' obligations to manage and mitigate risks.

This manual covers the most critical areas on which regulators are focusing examinations, including:

• Setting up a risk management function, organizing for risk management, and appointing a Risk Management Officer (Chapters 1 through 3);

• Evaluating when to purchase insurance to transfer risks (Chapter 4);

• Conducting risk assessments for the entire institution's products, services, and functions consistent with the seven regulatory risk management areas: credit risk, interest rate and market risk, liquidity risk, transaction risk, compliance and legal risk, reputation risk, and strategic risk (Chapter 5); and

• Evaluating preventative measures to help you respond to common risk issues found in examinations that may also impact your institution (Chapters 6 through 11).

As you adopt the practices and programs in this manual, you are likely to uncover risk areas that require additional controls to reduce risks. We suggest that you work closely with your internal and external auditors to determine what controls are the most cost-effective to implement. In addition, for best results, your internal auditor should use a risk based audit approach to audit planning. The risk based audit approach can be coordinated with the risk assessments covered in this manual to optimize the auditor's efforts. You should also coordinate periodic risk assessment updates with the risk based audit planning schedule and the institution's strategic planning sessions to provide for good communications among all institution functions.

The manual also includes more than 100 examples of specific risks, drawn from each of the major risk areas, and includes suggested remedies.

Preorder now for a chance to win a VIP trip—complete with a private jet flight to LA—to enjoy a five-star dinner with the Master of Love himself, Spectacular Smith!*

Since Spectacular Smith started sharing his thoughts on love, sex and relationships with millions of followers on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, fans have been telling him, “You gotta write a book!” So by popular demand—available worldwide for 90 days only—this sharp ebook exclusive lays it on you with a straight up, big brother style that makes Steve Harvey look like Mr. Rogers. Spectacular Love: How to Make Good Love Last will take you less than 90 minutes to read, and it just might change your life.

As a member of Pretty Ricky, the hottest and most controversial boy band of the 2000s, Spectacular Smith was onstage in front of thousands of adoring fans, knowing that after the show, there’d be women lined up for a chance to get with him. “No regrets” is an understatement. For three years, Spec was living the dream of every red-blooded American dude, but one day he simply decided to man up and settle down.

Instead of spending every night with a different woman—or women—Spec wanted to go to bed every night with one person who would be the love of his life, the mother of his children, a partner he could depend on through all the industry BS and the complicated business of being Spectacular. That’s when he met Jamee, a London-born knockout with brains and beauty.

“I didn’t change,” Spec says now. “I grew up.”

Ten years later, Spec is back in the studio and continues to build his social media empire. Jamee insists on keeping her job as an accountant, even though her modeling career is on the rise. As a couple, they’re busier and more in love than ever since the birth of their son, Spectacular Blue Smith, Jr.

“I’m not about telling anybody how to live their life,” says Spec. “I just know what I know because I lived it. Come with me if you want to know what I learned.”

How did they beat the overwhelming odds to build the relationship so many of us want? What does it take to stay grounded in a world that spins as fast as Spec’s? What are the essential elements of a lasting relationship? How does marriage fit into the picture for millennial lovers? And—the big question—are you ready to experience Spectacular Love in your own life?

About the Author
Spectacular Smith is a Forbes Magazine-featured entrepreneur who coaches artists and startups on branding and social media. He also performs in the R&B group Pretty Ricky with his brothers—Pleasure P, Baby Blue and Slick ‘Em. In 2004, their platinum debut album, Bluestars, brought them to national attention with the hit single “Grind On Me.” They followed up with a string of gold and platinum records including “Your Body” and “On the Hotline.” Spec lives in LA with his significant other, Pretty Jamee, and their son, Spec Junior.

A Must-Read! ❤️

I usually don't read books like this because the tone in a lot of these types of books are pretty boring. Spectacular, however, found a way to write a book that was informative and funny at the same time. While you're reading it, you'll feel that Spectacular is a good friend of yours who is simply trying to give you great advice.

OMG READ THIS
By jomama
This book was so funny/entertaining and RIGHT ON about love, dating, fighting with your man/woman, communicating, getting through hard time, and loving thru good times. He tells the story about his love with his girlfriend and their child. In addition to being a famous rapper, he's a man who knows how to be everything for his woman. MEN need to read this! His advice is different from what you hear all the time because he speaks the truth! It didn't take long to read. Binged in one sitting. I laughed, got mad, had tears in my eye one or two times. I'll be smarter about love having read this!

Run to the Hills
By Spider Monkey
Run To The Hills is probably the best place to start if you want to learn more about the career of Iron Maiden. This looks at their formation, rise to fame, the various line-ups, albums, concerts, band disputes and other general information about this classic group. You also get a good selection of photographs. Mick Wall is a respected rock journalist and this book is no exception, great story, well told. Make sure you track down the latest edition of this book as i've seen at least three versions now and it'll be worth getting the most up-to-date one if you can. A great history of one of Britain's most influential metal groups. Well worth a read.

The Early American Republic, 1789-1829, by Paul E. Johnson

Synthesizing political, social, and cultural aspects of early U.S. history, The Early American Republic, 1789-1829 provides a unique and integrated overview of the era. Focusing on the politics and process of nation-making and the birth of American market society, the book addresses two main subjects. First, it recounts the history of national politics from the presidency of George Washington through the inauguration of Andrew Jackson. During that period, the Founders struggled to make a national republic, then watched as their United States became bigger, more democratic, and more divided than anything they had envisioned. Second, the book describes the beginnings of American market society, demonstrating how many Americans began to organize their lives around earning, buying, and selling. The Early American Republic, 1789-1829 illustrates the formative years of American nationhood, democracy, and free-market capitalism. While most people consider these to be inevitably American, the book demonstrates that none were natural, inevitable, or undisputed in 1789.
Examining all aspects of the Early Republic, the book explores such topics as family life, religion, the construction and reconstruction of gender systems, the rise of popular print and other forms of communication, and evolving attitudes toward slavery and race. It also covers the social history of market society, territorial expansion, and the growth of slavery, offering detailed region-, race-, and class-specific considerations of family life and religion. Providing a brief, comprehensive, and clearly written synthesis of American political, economic, social, and cultural development, The Early American Republic, 1789-1829 is ideal for courses in the early national period.

Review

"This is a highly readable, nicely fleshed-out distillation of key themes and developments in the early republic, most notably the new nation's transformation from an (ideally) orderly republic to a tumultuous democracy and from a 'colonial' economy dependent on exports to a more 'developed' economy with strong internal markets. It makes sense of Americans' hopes and expectations coming out of the ratification period and provides a map for navigating the economic, social, and political developments not only up to 1829, but also afterwards."--Kirsten Wood, Florida International University

"This text, written by a master historian and incorporating the outpouring of research on the New Republic from the last two decades, should prove very useful. Johnson's scholarship is impeccable."--Lawrence Peskin, Morgan University

"No other work I can think of would provide as clear or as quick an introduction."--Christopher Clark, University of Warwick, U.K.

The best introduction to this essential period in US history
By Festus
Johnson has been writing on the same topic throughout his career. Each of his books seems to be a distillation of his previous work, with each further refinement adding tremendously to what we know about one of the most surprising and unlikely periods in American history. Indeed, Johnson notes that the United States in 1789 was a losing bet. It was a small, weak collection of coastal settlements surrounded by much more powerful Indian nations and by European empires with zero affection for a radical political experiment in republican government. The nation was united only by the vague and untested Constitution, by shared dependence on English markets, and more or less by a shared language. It was also profoundly undemocratic. In almost every state only a handful of rich men were allowed to vote.

In this wonderful short book Johnson explains how everything changed in a single generation. Thirty years after ratifying the Constitution, the US had a stable political order, a population more than four times larger than at Independence, a vastly larger territorial base, and a totally different political culture in which average white men were the freest, most empowered on earth. Women and particularly Black people and Indians lost tremendous ground over the same period, as slavery boomed and the society turned hard toward a mercantile, commercial identity based on gaining individual wealth often at the expense of others or the larger community.

And that is just one example from this marvelous, thought-provoking book. Essential reading!

A very good primer covering the period of great change in American history
By gloine36
For instructors looking for a short book covering a specific era of American History such as the Early Republic, this is a good choice. Compare this book to the two volumes in the Oxford History of the United States that cover the same period and it is clear this is the smaller of the two. While it does not go into the greater depth that Gordon Wood and Daniel Walker Howe went to in Empire of Liberty and What Hath God Wrought, Johnson’s book does accomplish the task of highlighting the changes that occurred in the new Republic. That is exactly what students should be taking away from this period. Wood has spoken many times about this being the period of American history in which the nation underwent the greatest change. I think he is correct.

Paul E. Johnson is a professor emeritus at the University of South Carolina. His area of specialty has been the Early Republic. This book is a condensation of that specialty. I find it is a good book to work with in teaching students in conjunction with interactive lesson plans. It is comprised of six chapters that segment the periods into neat topics. Federalists, Jeffersonians, Jacksonians, and the changes in the North and South as the result of industrialization and cotton form the core of the chapters. Something I always point out to my students in our survey class is that they need to look at the US at two points in the class.

The first is 1776 when the Declaration of Independence was approved and the nation born. The second is 1863 when Lincoln delivers the Gettysburg Address and utters the words, “Fourscore and seven years ago.” I ask them to list the changes that took place between those dates. Then I ask them to date each change so that they have an idea when the changes took place. Invariably the changes take place in the early 18th century with many of them listed in the 1820s. It is hard to place specific dates to the changes, but a general consensus of approximate change is possible. What that shows is the changes originated earlier and became apparent to many by the 1820s. The process of change is mainly from 1789 to 1829, a span of 40 years in which the US was literally transformed so much that many of the people from 1789 who were still alive marveled at the transformation.

Johnson’s book goes a long way to helping illustrate the change. While it does not go into the greater depth many monographs do, it does serve as a primer on the period. When used with other resources, I have found the book to be very effective in delivering information to the students. It does have some faults which I think hurt it as a textbook supplement. One is that it lacks many illustrations and maps which I find are important in helping students identify pieces of the past. Many students are visual learners and the lack of illustrations really limits their ability to learn on a deeper level.

Strengths of the book are in the text and the sources used by Johnson. A good teacher always points to those sources to back up what is being taught. I continuously point out sources to students so they understand where historians get their information from. This is something that I consider quite important. The validity of what is being taught rests on those sources. Johnson used good sources and it shows.

All in all, this is a good book when used as a primer for the period. For people who want to learn more about the period without slogging through myriad details and 800 plus pages of history, this book will be exactly what they want. If they want to go into deeper study of a particular event, they can use Johnson’s sources and work from there.

Cognitive Neuroscience of Language, by David Kemmerer

Language is one of our most precious and uniquely human capacities, so it is not surprising that research on its neural substrates has been advancing quite rapidly in recent years. Until now, however, there has not been a single introductory textbook that focuses specifically on this topic.

Cognitive Neuroscience of Language fills that gap by providing an up-to-date, wide-ranging, and pedagogically practical survey of the most important developments in the field. It guides students through all of the major areas of investigation, beginning with fundamental aspects of brain structure and function, and then proceeding to cover aphasia syndromes, the perception and production of speech, the processing of language in written and signed modalities, the meanings of words, and the formulation and comprehension of complex expressions, including grammatically inflected words, complete sentences, and entire stories.

Drawing heavily on prominent theoretical models, the core chapters illustrate how such frameworks are supported, and sometimes challenged, by experiments employing diverse brain mapping techniques. Although much of the content is inherently challenging and intended primarily for graduate or upper-level undergraduate students, it requires no previous knowledge of either neuroscience or linguistics, defining technical terms and explaining important principles from both disciplines along the way.

Review

“A comprehensive, judicious, clear, and up-to-the-minute introduction to the fascinating study of the neural underpinnings of language.”
– Steven Pinker, Harvard University, and author of The Language Instinct

“It’s fantastic.  Organization is great, coverage is impressive and it is highly readable.  I’m impressed.”
– Greg Hickok, Professor, Cognitive Sciences, University of California Irvine

"This is a very interesting new book on the Cognitive Neuroscience of Language.  I recommend it for students and established researchers alike".
– Martin Pickering, Professor, Philosophy, Psychology and Language Sciences, the University of Edinburgh

“I am extremely impressed with the material that I have seen. It is engagingly written without being shallow or pandering too much. It covers difficult material clearly, and brings in experimental studies with a good frequency and describes them with an appropriate level of detail and with good use of figures. The material is impressively up-to-date given the broad coverage, and the author does a great job of describing debates that have not been resolved in an evenhanded way that will allow the material to stand the test of time longer.”
– Ellen Lau, Assistant Professor, Linguistics, University of Maryland

“The chapters address critical issues in the field, while also providing an up-to-date review of current literature. The book strikes just the right balance between theory and application to keep students interested in the material.  The author has done an excellent job of presenting research from different disciplines and integrating the patient and neuroimaging literature.”
– Christopher M. Grindrod, Assistant Professor, Speech and Hearing Science, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign

“…provides a rich and detailed introduction to the cognitive neuroscience of language. It is beautifully written – difficult ideas and concepts are explained with great clarity. It is a unique contribution in many ways.”
 – Sheila E. Blumstein, Albert D. Mead Professor, Cognitive, Linguistic & Psychological Sciences, Brown University

“This is a wonderfully clear and informative book. It feels very cutting edge – up to the minute and also provides students with inspiration to dig further.  I find this book to be a very welcome addition to what is currently out there on language and neuroscience and imagine it will become a core textbook in the area.”
– Jodi Tommerdahl, Associate Professor, Curriculum and Instruction, University of Texas at Arlington

“Excellent – I read it much faster than I had anticipated I would – it was well written and you want to read more…. (at least that was my feeling – students might be a little less elated, but I still think it would be able to enthuse a good number of students).”
 – Filip T. Loncke, Associate Professor, Speech Pathology & Audiology, University of Virginia

"This textbook stands out in covering a wide breadth of topics while also providing adequate depth for students in my Introduction to Neurolinguistics course to engage with the ongoing debates and most recent theoretical developments in the field."
– Jonathan Brennan, Assistant Professor, Linguistics, University of Michigan

“The material is impressive.  The coverage is ambitious and representative of the state of the field.  The chapters are well organized and present the material clearly and with an engaging tone.”
 – Eva Fernández, Associate Professor, Linguistics & Communication Disorders, Queens College and Graduate Center, City University of New York

“This is an excellent, research-based and evidence-based textbook for Cognitive Neuroscience of Language.”
– Li Hsieh, Associate Professor, Communication Sciences & Disorders, Wayne State University

“A big pro is that this book does not assume much background in either linguistics or cognitive science. I like it that most chapters start with a discussion of different theoretical viewpoints, and then discuss evidence pro and con using data from a wide range of cognitive neuroscience studies .”
– Edith Kaan, Associate Professor, Department of Linguistics, University of Florida

“As a linguist with background but not expertise in psychology, I find the material immensely valuable. Mostly because it presents an overview of lots of research in cognitive neuroscience and filters that research in an understandable way so that the big picture can be perceived. And it relates the cognitive neuroscience research directly to linguistics in a way that does justice to both fields. It is admirable that the author has such command over two very different fields.”
 – Nancy Hedberg, Professor, Linguistics, Simon Fraser University

“Definitely comprehensive, and careful about framing current debates in a literature that is in many places not very mature. I think that Kemmerer’s expertise as a linguist and as a cognitive neuro-scientist really shine through making this a valuable text that is informed by broad and deep understanding.”
– Laura Kertz, Assistant Professor, Cognitive, Linguistic & Psychological Sciences, Brown University

"David Kemmerer's Cognitive Neuroscien of Language is a superb textbook on the relation between language and the human brain ... but it will, I suspect, also become the standard work for all those researchers who wish to have a masterly overview–both broad and deep–of aphasia and neurolinguistics to frame the focus of their own research."

– Michael A. Arbib, PsyCRITIQUES, 2015

Not good for undergrads whatsoever

Definitely a grad school book. Too detailed and advanced for undergrads. If you are buying this for a 1000 level undergrad course, double check to make sure if you *actually* need it (ask previous peers and so on). Sad, and too expensive for how little most students used it. :(

Go Tell It on the Mountain (Vintage International), by James Baldwin

"Mountain," Baldwin said, "is the book I had to write if I was ever going to write anything else." Go Tell It On The Mountain, first published in 1953, is Baldwin's first major work, a novel that has established itself as an American classic. With lyrical precision, psychological directness, resonating symbolic power, and a rage that is at once unrelenting and compassionate, Baldwin chronicles a fourteen-year-old boy's discovery of the terms of his identity as the stepson of the minister of a storefront Pentecostal church in Harlem one Saturday in March of 1935. Baldwin's rendering of his protagonist's spiritual, sexual, and moral struggle of self-invention opened new possibilities in the American language and in the way Americans understand themselves.

Amazon.com Review
First published in 1953 when James Baldwin was nearly 30, Go Tell It on the Mountain is a young man's novel, as tightly coiled as a new spring, yet tempered by a maturing man's confidence and empathy. It's not a long book, and its action spans but a single day--yet the author packs in enough emotion, detail, and intimate revelation to make his story feel like a mid-20th-century epic. Using as a frame the spiritual and moral awakening of 14-year-old John Grimes during a Saturday night service in a Harlem storefront church, Baldwin lays bare the secrets of a tormented black family during the depression. John's parents, praying beside him, both wrestle with the ghosts of their sinful pasts--Gabriel, a preacher of towering hypocrisy, fathered an illegitimate child during his first marriage down South and refused to recognize his doomed bastard son; Elizabeth fell in love with a charming, free-spirited young man, followed him to New York, became pregnant with his son, and lost him before she could reveal her condition.

Baldwin lays down the terrible symmetries of these two blighted lives as the ironic context for John's dark night of the soul. When day dawns, John believes himself saved, but his creator makes it clear that this salvation arises as much from blindness as revelation: "He was filled with a joy, a joy unspeakable, whose roots, though he would not trace them on this new day of his life, were nourished by the wellspring of a despair not yet discovered."

Though it was hailed at publication for its groundbreaking use of black idiom, what is most striking about Go Tell It on the Mountain today is its structure and its scope. In peeling back the layers of these damaged lives, Baldwin dramatizes the story of the great black migration from rural South to urban North. "Behind them was the darkness," Baldwin writes of Gabriel and Elizabeth's lost generation, "nothing but the darkness, and all around them destruction, and before them nothing but the fire--a bastard people, far from God, singing and crying in the wilderness!" This is Baldwin's music--a music in which rhapsody is rooted anguish--and there is none finer in American literature. --David Laskin

Review
“With vivid imagery, with lavish attention to details, Mr. Baldwin has told his feverish story.” —The New York Times

“Brutal, objective and compassionate.” —San Francisco Chronicle

“It is written with poetic intensity and great narrative skill.” —Harper’s

“Strong and powerful.” —Commonweal

“A sense of reality and vitality that is truly extraordinary. . . . He knows Harlem, his people, and the language they use.” —Chicago Sun-Times

“This is a distinctive book, both realistic and brutal, but a novel of extraordinary sensitivity and poetry.” —Chicago Sunday Tribune

From the Publisher
James Baldwin's stunning first novel is now an American classic. With startling realism that brings Harlem and the black experience vividly to life, this is a work that touches the heart with emotion while it stimulates the mind with its narrative style, symbolism, and excoriating vision of racism in America. Moving through time from the rural South to the northern ghetto, starkly contrasting the attitudes of two generations of an embattles family, Go Tell It On The Mountain is an unsurpassed portrayal of human beings caught up in a dramatic struggle and of a society confronting inevitable change.

"The most important novel written about the American Negro," says Commentary. "It is written with poetic intensity and great narrative skill," writes Harper's. Saturday Review praises it as "masterful," and the San Francisco Chronicle declares that this important American novel is "brutal, objective and compassionate."

Sweeter the Second Time Around
By Dera R Williams
This was my second time reading this masterpiece;the first time in the early 70s. I don't remember what I thought about it then, though I remember it leaving an impression. The writing then and moreso now is writing at its best from a master in my opinion. Yes it is complex, convoluted, disturbing at times but for me it flowed. Not everyone can write fire and brimstone, sin and redemption in literary terms. I am in awe of his genius.
During one night at a prayer service, four individuals stories are told. John, on this day has just turned fourteen years old and is trying to make sense of his life. Gentle, intelligent, he wanted so much to please the man who he thought of as his father. He had potential to expand his life beyond the limitations in front of him. Gabriel, wretched, tortured soul, a man who refused to take responsibility for his actions. Saved, sanctified and fill with the Holy Ghost, his mistreatment of his first wife, Deborah, his discard lover, Esther, his present wife Elizabeth and his son John is what kept him from being the minister that he was in his youth before he fell from grace. Elizabeth, proud and determined, she wanted John to have the same love from Gabriel that he gave to his other "natural" sons. A woman who accepted her circumstances; she has lost her first true love, Richard and was resigned to accepting Gabriel's hand in marriage to redeem her sin. Florence, too proud for her own good Bitter, resentful of her brother Gabriel and now perhaps facing death, she has lived a live of unfulfilled dreams.
Where we they all stand after they haved poured their hearts and souls on the alter? Secrets, dreams, hopes are revealed. Told in a language of complexity full of allegories, symbolism, Bible similies, it is no wonder it is taught in universities around the country. I am on a quest to read re-read Baldwin's books that I have read and read others that I have not. Nobody does it better.

Who Should Read This Book
By wendlafa@newulmtel.net
Looking over the reviews, I was surprised at how often reviewers said this books was tedious to them. I found it one of the strongest and most powerful books I have read it a long time, with language that was exalted, and often hymn-like in its quality.
Concerning the book, then, I would like to suggest a couple of things to readers and to those who suggest books for others to read:
1)Don't read this book unless you know your Bible well, particularly the King James version. Without this as your base, I would guess that you'd find the language incredibly dense, and most of Baldwin's allusive power will blow past you.
2)Don't read this book unless you have some experience in life. Again, I would think that the way Baldwin is able to put deep inner struggles and the feelings that rise from hard experience into words will remain lost to you unless you've had some hard experience of your own.
3) If you're not African American, a little pre-reading into the Black experience in America might be helpful first, looking into particularly the Great Migration, the Azusa street revival, and the rise of the storefront church.
4) Practice reading the book out loud!! Many passages were written in an almost oral form, the kind one hears in preaching, with rolling sentences that seem to go on forever. Don't let the long sentences intimidate. Rather let them sweep you along, phrase for phrase, as they're meant to.

A strong an poignant tour of the human condition
By A Customer
First I want to say. I really don't understand how anyone with enough intelligence to load this site and write a review (and it doesn't take much) could speak so critically about such a powerful book. I can't even dismiss two of the reviews as complaints of illiterate teenagers. How can anyone ignore the universal theme of the book, the human condition. The entrapment of an individual inside personal, ethnic, religious, racial, and/or ancestral bonds. As for the "boringness" of the book, it seems to me that any one could appreciate this book, it is jsut as captivating as any thriller. John's struggle with his own identity as a person, a "saint", and African-American, is captivating. Yes we all go through the same type of self-discovery, but no one captures, in such eloquent wording, the angst of such a revelation. In response to the critique of Baldwin's writing style. I can see how some people might not be able to have patience for his elongated sentences, and biblical references. And if you are too frustrated to make it through the entire book, I think I might understand...but please don't downgrade what you have read. Baldwin's work is likely the "Pit and the Pendulum" of the 20th Century.
I would aslo like to say to the highschool students who read this book, that if I can appreciate it (and I am sixteen) I think you can too.
