This book provides practical advice on the most effective nutrients to prevent or alleviate ailments, their best food sources and the daily nutritional needs. It also explains how vitamins and minerals work in the body and the symptoms of their deficiency.
The introduction explains in detail how they work, how to maintain optimum health, the particular nutrients that various groups are most likely to need, healthy eating and the ins and outs of taking supplements.
The next section deals with individual Essential Nutrients under the headings of how it functions, what ailments it can remedy, the deficiency symptoms of that nutrient, vital food sources and the recommended daily allowance. Vitamins and minerals from Vit A to Zinc are covered here.
There are also short sections on other supplements like Amino Acids, Co-Enzyme Q10, Acidophilus, Bioflavonoids, Boron and various herbs. Then follows an A - Z of symptoms and their remedies, from acne and allergies to varicose veins. Jeff was born in Minneapolis, MN, and grew up in the Land of 10,000 Lakes, accounting for an early interest in boating. After a brief tenure as the Assistant Director of the Naval and Underseas Museum in Newport, RI, Jeff migrated to Southern California, beginning a remarkable 15-year career as a writer, producer and director in Hollywood. Attending six colleges and universities along the way, Jeff earned degrees in psychology and post-graduate degrees in engineering. Having written, produced or directed nearly 30 films, network television specials (six for Arnold Schwarzenegger), Las Vegas revues and Broadway productions, Jeff moved to Florida in the early 1980s to write about the evolution of American technology and industry.

He became the editor of Southern Star magazine, then Florida's largest circulation magazine. To reach an even broader audience, Jeff began to syndicate his business, technology and industrial history columns, ultimately reaching nearly two million readers a month. A sanitized history of Mercury Marine compared to "Iron Fist"

This book gives a good history of Mercury Marine from it's beginnings and formative years under Karl Kiehaefer, to the present division of Brunswick that it is now. Of note, this is a much more sanitized version of the history of Mercury Marine in comparison to "Iron Fist" (ISBN: 0945903049) and is also significantly shorter as well. If you're looking at this book as a possible purchase, let me also suggest "The Legend of OMC" (ISBN: 0945903103) but I must encourage you to read Iron Fist above both this Mercury book and the OMC book.

I'm rating this book 3 of 5 stars, because while it is a decent and informative read, it doesn't hold a candle to "Iron Fist." All three of these books are by the same author, Jeffrey L. Rodengen, but I've noticed that his "commissioned by the company" books are more sanitized and miss a lot of the behind-the-scenes stories (some of those stories are exciting, some of them traumatic, and some of them are drama that would leave day-time soap operas wishing they could measure up). Why Can't I Take the Last Donut?

Author Judith Bowman covers a lot of business etiquette in relatively few pages. I found her chapter about exchanging business cards especially informative, and her warning about showing the soles of your feet was quite interesting. (I didn't know some cultures find soles of feet vulgar and low, and it's insulting to be shown them.) I also learned there isn't gender differentiation for business etiquette.

This book is worth reading if you're new to giving business presentations or attending business meetings, or if you need to brush up on what's current in the business world.
Note: The book's title, which amused me and caused me pick up the book, set me up to expect a humorous book. It is NOT humorous. But it is not dry/dull either; it's a pleasant read. Also, Bowman states that you shouldn't take the last donut, but she doesn't say why.

Good guide for the basics

This is a great book for anyone that needs a little bit of extra confidence if they aren't used to business meetings and events (the places in which a tie, vice jeans, are worn). The rules aren't complicated, and the author uses common sense to explain when to do what, so the "rules" are easily remembered.
Must read for anyone, a perfect gift for graduation.
Recommended. BTW, I bought the paperback AND kindle version... so I can flip through some notes on the kindle when I'm on the road...the book is good enough that I bought it twice!

The Shiva Sutra was revealed to Vasugupta by Shiva in order to counter the effects of dualism. Bhaskara is in the direct lineage of Vasugupta. To Bhaskara's commentary, Mark Dyczkowski has added his translation of an anonymous commentary as an aid to understanding Bhaskara's interpretation. This anonymous writer also serves as a bridge between Ksemaraja's and Bhaskara's commentaries, drawing from both. The commentary on each sutra is thus in three layers. Bhaskara's commentary is first, followed by the anonymous commentary, after which Dyczkowski adds his own exposition and compares Bhaskara and Ksemaraja.
Ksemaraja's commentary, the Vimarsini, has been translated by Jaideva Singh and published by SUNY Press under the title Siva Sutra.

Mark S. G. Dyczkowski took his first degree at Banaras Hindu University and then his doctorate at Oxford. He is presently associated with Sampurnananda Sanskrit University in Varanasi. He is the author of The Doctrine of Vibration: An Analysis of the Doctrines and Practices of Kashmir Shaivism; The Canon of the Saivagama and the Kubjika: Tantras of the Western Kaula Tradition; and The Stanzas on Vibration: The Spanda Karika with Four Commentaries.

Great Translation and Commentary

The philosophy of Kashmir Shaivism was born in the 9th century when Lord Shiva revealed the 77 aphorisms which have come to constitute the Shiva Sutras to the sage, Vasugupta in a dream. Sri Vasugupta was then instructed to seek out a specific rock on Mahadev Mountain. When Vasugupta struck the rock, it is said to have turned over, revealing the Shiva Sutras inscribed upon the rock. The rock, called Shankaropala, is still located at the original site, although the aphorisms can no longer be found inscribed there.

The book "Aphorisms of Shiva" by Mark Dyczkowski is a translation of the Shiva Sutras with a commentary from Bhaskara, an early sage of Kashmir Shaivism hailing from the lineage of Sage Vasugupta himself. It also features another anonymous commentary. Many generations removed from Vasugupta, a brilliant Master from this same lineage, named Abhinivagupta, wrote the master work of Kashmir Shaivism, the Tantraloka. In a monumental feat of scholarship and penetrating insight, Abhinavagupta rendered the works of these early proponents of Kashmir Shaivism into a cohesive whole which included all the eminent Tantric traditions of the time and region. Abhinava's foremost disciple, Kshemaraja went on to write a commentary on the Shiva Sutras, following the inclusive style of his Guru, that has been widely translated in our own era. In his "Aphorisms of Shiva", Professor Dyczkowski additionally compares the commentary representative of the early stream of Kashmiri Shaivite teaching to that of the later "Trika" system first expounded by Abhinava and furthered by Kshemaraja.

While it isn't the most easily-understood of philosophical pursuits, it's depth is immeasurable and its rewards are bountiful. Studied diligently, especially in conjunction with a spiritual practice and under the direction of a teacher who can help illumine the experience which the tradition points to, the "Shiva Sutras" can help uncover the most vast of treasures. If this path calls to you, I encourage the study of Professor Dyczkowski's "Aphorisms" in particular.

Tomasz Brozek is a technical fellow at PDF Solutions, San Jose, California, USA, where he is responsible for advanced silicon technology characterization, diagnostic methods development, and early yield ramp of integrated circuits. He holds an MS EE and a Ph.D in physics. His doctorate research at the Institute of Semiconductor Physics in Kiev, Ukraine focused on radiation effects and degradation in microelectronic MOS systems. One of the more useful texts

Purchased this text for a graduate dynamic optimization in economics course at Rice. It is very well written with excellent examples. Did quite a few problems, they are well designed to illuminate the topics covered. Almost no useful coverage of numerical methods, which is what I most wanted to take away from the course. The emphasis is on theory, there is a decent section on static optimization and differential equations. Wish we could have used this text for math-econ rather than Rudin, it is more practical for applied economists (I'm doing a marketing PhD) who don't do heavy theory work that require the real-analysis machinery. Overall, an excellent text if you are not looking for numerical methods. I would suggest Adda and Cooper and Judd for application with numerical methods.

I am almoust sure that mathematicians and "orthodox" economists do not like this book but for graduates with a lousy background in and a certain degree of fear of mathematics it is a perfect tool to begin and get affected.

She finds herself caught between the traditional Eskimo ways and the modern ways of the whites. Miyax, or Julie as her pen pal Amy calls her, sets out alone to visit Amy in San Francisco, a world far away from Eskimo culture and the frozen land of Alaska.

During her long and arduous journey, Miyax comes to appreciate the value of her Eskimo heritage, learns about herself, and wins the friednship of a pack of wolves. After learning the language of the wolves and slowly earning their trust, Julie becomes a member of the pack.

A classic for nature lovers

An excellent book full of natural and cultural history. Some events,though necessary to the story, will be disturbing to younger readers. It is a spellbinding account of life in Alaska by a very knowledgeable author. I would recommend discussing the issues of rape and hunting and family conflict as the story develops.

Coming of Age Story

This is the story of Miyax, a thirteen-year-old Eskimo girl who must decide whether to choose her own destiny or let others decide it for her: all within very constricted circumstances. Miyax's mother died years ago, and she lives with her father. But when she is forced to go away to school in another village and live with her aunt, she hears that her father has died. She then does what he told her to do: marry an Eskimo boy named Daniel. This marriage had been arranged by the parents. Miyax marries, but Daniel forces sex on Miyax, and she flees.

The main part of the story tells how Miyax learns to live in the wild, with a pack of wolves, by studying their ways and being accepted by them. If it weren't for the wolves, she would starve to death. Then Miyax learns that her father did not die, he married a white woman and has adopted non-Eskimo ways. Her father wants Miyax to come live with him, but he hunts wolves from a small aircraft, firing down on and killing them. Miyax cannot tolerate this and runs away again, determined to live on her own, in the wild. In the end, she realizes with great sadness that the days of Eskimos living off the land are gone forever, and she returns to her father.

The wilderness scenes with the wolves are wonderful, and Miyax is an empathetic hero. There's a lot going on in this book, plot-wise, and I'm not sure the resolution works, even though it is realistic. But this is a powerful story of a thirteen-year-old girl living on the edge of two different worlds, having to decide which one she will live in.

This was my favorite book when I was in third grade (1989). I haven't read it since, but I was having some wine and mentioned it so my son bought it for my birthday.

It's a little different than I remember, but it's still fabulous.

I never knew there were sequels (my son bought them for me, too) and I cannot wait to read them!
