Learn about SQL Server 2014 from a SQL developer’s perspective

I have written a detailed chapter-by-chapter review of this book on www DOT i-programmer DOT info, the first and last parts of this review are given here. For my review of all chapters, search i-programmer DOT info for STIRK together with the book's title.

Despite a misleading title, this book aims to provide SQL developers with the knowledge to get the most out of SQL Server 2014.

Firstly, from the book’s title I expected an in-depth discussion of the various aspects of the T-SQL programming language from a SQL Server 2014 perspective. Even the blurb on the publisher’s website says: “Pro T–SQL Programmer’s Guide is your guide to making the best use of the powerful, Transact-SQL programming language that is built into Microsoft SQL Server's database engine.”

However, this book is not a discussion about T-SQL specifically; rather it is a guide to SQL Server 2014’s functionality from a developer’s viewpoint. The book’s title seems incorrect.

The book is aimed at SQL Server developers wanting to get up to speed on functionality in SQL Server 2014. It’s not an introductory book, and assumes a working knowledge of T-SQL .

Below is a chapter-by-chapter exploration of the topics covered.

Chapter 1 Foundations of T-SQL

The chapter provides an overview of how SQL has developed, its basic structure, and the importance of coding style. A brief summary of the development of Codd’s relational model is given. The difference between declarative (e.g. SQL) and imperative (e.g. C) languages is highlighted – i.e. WHAT to do as opposed to HOW to do it. The basic constituents of SQL are outlined in discussing schemas, tables, indexes, stored procedures, user-defined functions, 3-value logic, etc. This is followed by a review of the importance of coding style and formatting. This is a good overview of where SQL came from and its major components.

The chapter is well written, with useful explanations, code examples, outputs, inter-chapter links, and diagrams. A helpful summary, together with chapter-related exercises, are provided. These traits apply to each chapter of the book.

Conclusion

From a developer’s perspective, I found this book an enjoyable read, with lots of useful example code, having wide-ranging coverage of the major SQL Server features. It will certainly get developers from previously versions of SQL Server or from other platforms up-to-speed, but be aware it is not a book for beginners.

If you exclude the chapter on In-Memory Programming, I think perhaps 95% of the book is the same as its previous edition. There’s a lot more that could be said on most topics (e.g. In-Memory Programming), and not all new 2014 specific topics are mentioned (e.g. the new cardinality estimator, resource governor limit by IO, and incremental option for create statistics). Although the book is aimed at SQL Server 2014, it covers features introduced from 2005 onwards, so could be applicable to previous versions.

The summaries and exercises at the end of each chapter are good for revision and understanding. Some links for further information are provided. It would have been useful to include places to go to keep up to date with SQL Server (e.g. websites, newsletters, blogs etc).

As a book about SQL Server 2014 from a SQL developer’s perspective, I would recommend it.

Fantastic Guide to all the new features in SQL Server 2014. I'm using it constantly. There are tech books that prop up your monitor, ones that sit on the shelf, and those that stay on your desk, opened to the section you are struggling with. This one stays on my desk.

For more than thirty years, philosopher Bernard Gert has been developing and refining his distinctive and comprehensive moral theory. His classic work, The Moral Rules: A New Rational Foundation for Morality, was first published in 1970. In 1988, Oxford published a fourth revision titled Morality: A New Justification of the Moral Rules. In this final revision, Gert has produced the fullest and most sophisticated account of this influential theoretical model. Here, he makes clear that morality is an informal system that does not provide unique answers to every moral question but does always limit the range of morally acceptable options, and so explains why some moral disagreements cannot be resolved. The importance placed on the moral ideals also makes clear that the moral rules are only one part of the moral system. A chapter that is devoted to justifying violations of the rules illustrates how the moral rules are embedded in the system and cannot be adequately understood independently of it. The chapter on reasons includes a new account of what makes one reason better than another and elucidates the complex hybrid nature of rationality.

Although Gert's moral theory is sophisticated, it is presented with a clarity that enables it to serve as an excellent introduction for beginning philosophy students, as well as fruitful reading for advanced undergraduate and graduate courses. Unlike most moral theories, his account of morality is developed in sufficient detail to be useful to those interested in problems of applied ethics. This book will appeal to those engaged in business ethics, engineering ethics, environmental ethics, and especially medical ethics. In the manner of the works of Thomas Hobbes and John Stuart Mill, this book addresses the general philosophical reader and at the same time makes an important contribution to the philosophical literature.

A native Cincinnatian, like myself, moral philosopher Bernard Gert has been the only author who has defined morality in a way that is not only understandable but profoundly affecting and real. A book to be read slowly, taking notes, absorbing every notion or explanation put forward by the author. Gert died in 2011 but his writings will remain as a pillar of our understanding of what is right or wrong without resorting to supernatural beings, just looking inside ourselves for what rules and ideals will diminish suffering, pain, and evil.

A practical presentation of morality

If you are interested in reading about morality in a manner that is easy to understand and that seems to make sense, this is a good book to read. His idea that morality should be presented in a manner that the public can easily understand is admirable. Too often authors present ideas in a manner too dificult for the "lay person" to understand. This book is a pleasant read on morality.

In this book Bernard Gert takes a new approach to ethical theory, abandoning the old stance of special or unique knowledge of morality. Instead he seeks to discover and justify the moral rules by examining our moral judgements. Using this method he captures morality and its rules to a degree not before seen. I cannot recommend highly enough reading this text.

About the Author

Vincent Lebot, PhD, started working on tropical root crops in 1981 when teaching agriculture in Vanuatu, South Pacific. He is the scientific coordinator of the Taro Network for Southeast Asia and Oceania (TANSAO) and of SPYN (the South Pacific Yam Network). In 2003, he was the recipient of the David Fairchild Medal for Plant Exploration. He is presently coordinating root crops agrobiodiversity research and attempting to find a solution to the sustainable preservation and use of their genetic resources.

Beautiful book that is well put together and laid out featuring some of the best Star Wars themed tattoos anywhere. It finds a balance between highlighting those that get these type of tattoos to the artists that create them. There are some great pictures of amazingly creative, and well thought out, Star Wars tattoos; both big and small. The book is an impressive feat as it goes worldwide, featuring artist from varied countries and locales, and shows how universal the love for SW and tattoos are, while highlighting difference in tattoo styles. The book flows well and the production from quality of binding to paper that it is printed on, is superb. Liking SW and tattoos, I can't say enough good things about this book and highly recommend it to those interested in it.

OH MY GOD THIS IS THE BEST BOOK EVER!! This is a wonderful journey for collectors, and artists alike!

If you get this one and don't have Vol 1, you'll need it. Beautiful photos, great write ups! One of these coffee table style books then NEVER leaves my table. Highs quality and DURABLE (yes that is a factor with books to me) not a flimsy book. It has major weight to it because it's FILLED with awesome. It could also be used as an anti theft device (use your imagination, this thing is MASSIVE) and could possibly stop a speeding bullet and save your life. I haven't tested this out, but I'm not going to say it's impossible.

Buy one, Buy two, Buy Fourty-Two.

You'll thank me later.

A must for Star Wars and tattoo fans

The Force in the Flesh Vol. 2 is a fantastic book for those who are fans of tattoos and Star Wars. The book is organized by tattoo artist with each artist receiving a detailed bio that dives deep into their Star Wars passion. From there the artist's work is highlighted in brilliant photos. The presentation and the organization of the photos is amazing. By far the best part of this book is that there are over 300 pages of photos!!! I am thrilled with my copy and it is displayed prominently in my living room and is always a conversation piece.
