The Burdens of Leadership

You'll read about the burdens of a rising dictator. So many responsibilities, including teaching your countrymen how to think!

As advertised: This is written as an autobiography, and I think it is about as accurate as it could be, albeit about half the length the Dear Leader would have published. The author stays true to his mission to write as KJI would.

I was most impressed with the author's knowledge of 1) history, 2) the inner workings within North Korea, and 3) the dilemmas a dictator faces when he pushes a flawed ideology. For example, the US and Japan are the evil enemies of the state, yet like the Soviets too, they jump on any validation that these enemies can give their regime. (See Carter and Albright visits) In this book, you'll hear the dictator's rationale behind these seemingly contradicting values.

I have read many books on North Korea written by escapees. I would suggest this book shares the same lessons. I'd recommend this book to anyone who wants to further understand North Korea.

The author deviates once from what KJI would have written - he elaborates on the fact that US presidents - all of them in this time frame - failed to expose the horrible human rights violations in their Gulag system. No complaint here - that was refreshing.

I do have one complaint - the kindle version is poorly edited. Formatting from the paper version does not translate to kindle and you'll find numerous split paragraphs where side notes were added. Quite frustrating.

Very entertaining and intriguing book, questionable kindle version

I'm not finished with it yet, but it is so entertaining. I will need to do a lot of research afterward to figure out what is fact and what is Kim Jong Il's fiction. Malice captures the voice so well that I am easily drawn in to the character of Kim Jong. There is no shortage of tall tales as you'd expect from the grandiose dictator. The Kindle version has some weird formatting issues and quite a few typos, but eh.. whatever.

Clever book about the horrors of North Korea.

Great book. Writing it as an "autobiography" was a clever technique. It's a a funny read, but (semi-spoiler) the author kicks you the gut in the the last few pages for finding it funny. I would have given it 5 stars if there was a list of the author's source material and detailed endnotes.

Robert W. Goldfarb is the president and founder of Urban Directions, Inc., a global consulting firm. For 30 years he has consulted with CEO's and supervisors at every level, coaching on manufacturing lines, in corporate boardrooms, on sales floors, at law firms, universities, hospitals, investment banks and government agencies.

His coaching has one objective: helping managers achieve their fullest potential by avoiding behavior that damages careers. Goldfarb has written on managing in a changing society for the op-ed pages of The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, and for Readers' Digest.

Prior to founding his consulting firm, Goldfarb served in line and staff positions at AT&T, Mobil Oil Corporation, Hofstra University and the National Urban Coalition. He graduated with honors from Columbia University, where he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa and holds an M.A. from New York University.

Sage advice!

Goldfarb has prepared an essential, comprehensive coaching manual that addresses just about every possible reason why people highjack their careers. It's easy to read cover-to-cover or use as a reference for specific situations. If you're not particularly good at being candid with people about why you've not promoted them, just get them all a copy of this book. Bottom line - you won't realize your full potential until you start taking 100% responsibility for everything that happens to you. This insightful book will increase your awareness of behaviors that may be holding you back. Well done!

Boy, has Bob Goldfarb nailed it!
In just 192 pages, he superbly condenses his more than 30 years of experience in coaching, training and mentoring managers at all levels (and saving many of their careers)into a handful of does and don'ts to advancement. With an impressive 85% sucess rate, he should be listened to.
If you are like me, you many times might skip the Introduction section of a book to quickly get to the meat. Don't do this with Goldfarb's book; the Introduction is the meat. Here he plainly lays out how and why bosses make decisions about their managers career advancements. What is unique about this book is that Goldfarb has seen both sides: the manager seeking to advance and the boss. And he tells both sides well.
Travel with him through case study after case study and you surely will learn what you need to do to meet the expectations of your boss. And,if you are a boss, you will come away with a better understanding of what your managers are thinking and doing and how to improve their performance. It's a win win from either perpective.
Get this book. Read it. Learn from it. I'm getting it for all my managers.

Eye Opening

This is an eye opening book. In fact, I read it after having problems with my own boss, only to find an example almost identical to my situation!

The scary part of the he thinks/she thinks examples is: they're both right! What's right for the company, and your position, can be defined several ways. Even if your view is perfectly valid, aligning it with senior management is an art worth learning. Think about your boss' point of view and and act accordingly.

Put this on your bookshelf and re-read it every year. The many perspectives mean you'll find new meaning in it next time.

One other useful nugget: it was clear from some examples that the employee was simply working for the wrong company. Either the culture or the boss didn't fit. Read this, and maybe you'll realize you need to move on before that mismatch becomes something unfortunate on your resume.

About the Author
In the late 1960s Ole and his wife Hannah went on their honeymoon to Nepal and met the 16th Karmapa, the spiritual head of the Karma Kagyu lineage of Tibetan Buddhism. He transmitted to them the Great Seal and asked them, as his first Western students, to bring the teachings of the Buddha to the Western world. Over the past thirty years Lama Ole Nydahl has spread Diamond Way Buddhism worldwide. He provides practical guidance to more than five hundred meditation centers that are under the spiritual authority of the 17th Karmapa, Thaye Dorje.

Buddha's highest teachings

A poem written centuries ago by an enlightened man (the 3rd Karmapa Rangjung Dorje) can understandably be a bit difficult to interpret for a thoroughly unenlightened man like me, living in the 21st century.

Lama Ole Nydahl's explanation of this poem was invaluable. The Karmapa's poem consists of wishes that all beings achieve Buddhism's highest view, called "Mahamudra", or "The Great Seal" in English. Lama Ole's commentary unpacks each insightful line of this poem, and with modern language and relevant examples, brings them into a context we can all relate to.

If you're looking for exotic, 'holy' mumbo-jumbo, look elsewhere. But if you're interested in a practical explanation of the highest of Buddha's teachings, look no further. It doesn't get any better than this.

Lama Ole gives a true old tibetan highest teachings understandable even for beginner.

It's the one of my basic books I have always with me. This text is given a long time ago by 3rd Karmapa. And today this really one of the fundamental texts of Kagyu highest teachings is commented by Ole Nydahl, student of Karmapa 16th. It is fresh and will inspire even total pessimist.
