No need for new edition

Disappointing that ASCA thought they needed to go out of their way to create a new model for just a few changes causing students and school counselors to spend more money. Also, the previous edition was more user friendly and the samples were helpful.

ASCA standards

I like the ASCA book. Prefered the 2nd edition where the percentages of time were given in terms of time allocation for the various tasks. Putting indirect and direct services together for 80 % can present problems for counselors who want to work directly with students through classroom counseling, group and individual sessions. There are always numerous committes in schools and administrators looking for bodies to serve on them. It would be fairly easy for a school counselor to be very busy and actually see no students due to chairing or being a member of PBIS,SST,RTI,Intervention,Crisis,Equity,EC,and the list goes on and on and on. Please ASCA bring the % back in your 4th edition and deliniate between direct and indirect so school counselors won't be assigned to largely administrative/paperwork tasks withion the schools.

Great book

I am well pleased by the information in this book. I just started back to school to complete the end of my program and it is coming in handy. I would highly recommend it to anyone in the school counselling profession or any emerging student. I think what surprised me most was the fact that inside the first page or so it shows you how to write your citation for this book in your APA or MLA paper...how nice! Again, worth every bit of my money and I would not resell as it will be good for future reference.

Comprehensive

Ever wonder what those giant, confusing words on your dichotomous key mean? Look no further!
It is a very handy book to have if you do not have access to the internet while keying out a new insect. It is also handy if you are a beginner and have no idea what katepisternum (among many other words) means.

Good book if you want to have to look in only one place for your technical jargoning needs.

"A Dictionary of Entomology" - a poorly done entomological dictionary in the Kindle format

To test this very large dictionary I opened Physiologic Systems in Insects. This book is filled with complex words probably almost exclusively limited to entomologist. I used my 27" iMac 3.7 GHz with 8 GB RAM and an i7 core to look at both books side by side. I started at the beginning and looked up "autocrine". Nothing listed. I easily found this word in Webster's 3rd International Dictionary, Then I looked up "prothoracic" which to find I used the Search feature for the Dictionary of Entomology. To find it "easily" you have to wait while this huge dictionary is electronically indexed. The problem with this is that when it is done indexing it shows very place in the Dictionary where the word is used. This is a mixed blessing, since you sure can't do this with the hardbound version. Next, I did it the hard way by pushing the slider at the bottom of the screen and found there were several listings that used modified versions of the word prothoracic, but never just the word itself. I easily found the word and its meaning in the Webster's 3rd International Dictionary and the on-line Oxford English Dictionary.

Don't get me wrong, the Dictionary of Entomology is probably one of the most thorough and complete sources of entomological terms available. Unfortunately, I bought it in the Kindle format. It obviously was not designed with that in mind. So my suggestion is get an on-line subscription to either the Oxford English Dictionary or the the Webster's, and buy the Dictionary of Entomology in its hardbound version at a $127.30 and the Kindle version for a mere $120.94.

Excellent introduction to quaternions

If you know nothing about quaternions, and want to get a feel for how they work and what they can be used for, this book is perfect for you.

This book is also perfect e.g. if you are a programmer writing code that has to rotate things in 3D space. I'm not currently doing any coding that requires it, but I am confident that I could code up quaternion rotations without much trouble should the need arise. In fact, that is the purpose of this book more or less, to teach you to be able to do just that.

Those that are looking for a mathematically rigorous development of quaternions should look elsewhere. However, even for the more mathematically inclined (like I consider myself to be), since there are no difficult proofs to follow, the book can be read blazingly fast (just a few hours). If you are mathematically knowledgeable but have no real knowledge of quaternions (they aren't covered in any regular courses at my university, for example), this little book (it is quite slim!) can get you familiar, and fast. Some of the stuff covered in the book for the sake of completeness is extremely elementary, so if you are already familiar with these things (e.g. what a field is), I would say go ahead and skim those parts.

I give this book 5 stars for being the perfect book to get any mathematically adept person up to speed on the somewhat obscure mathematical entities called "quaternions"; if you are additionally a programmer, the book will also prepare you to write code to rotate arbitrary vectors using quaternions. The book also contains a marvelous discussion of complex numbers and their rotational properties, which naturally sets the stage for quaternions and their own rotational properties.

Note that in order to read this book you should at least be familiar with basic vector operations (mainly dot product and cross product; Calculus 3 is more than enough), as well as very basic linear algebra (i.e., know what a matrix is, how it operates on a vector, and how to multiply matrices).

Easy read to quickly understand quaternions

This is a great book on quaternions. Its a superb introduction and an easy read that takes you from the very basics of complex numbers to rotation matrices. Its a pretty short read if you already have some experience with complex numbers and rotation matrices, but I think it should be very accessible if you have little experience with either. It is well written, the language keeps a good flow and it is a pleasure to read. As a bonus, the author puts quaternions into a historical context with just the right amount of added information. Its neither too much or too little history. I would like to see a couple more illustrations throughout the book, but the most important examples are well illustrated.

Expensive for its size but worth it

Very clean, clear introduction. His use of the modern ordered-pair (s, v) notation makes understanding the derivations very easy. Anybody coming into this book with a reasonable grasp of vector algebra will leave with a clear understanding of quaternions in a short time.

The only quibbles are that it's pretty expensive and the author does not complete the p' = qpq* proof, only illustrating with examples that the resulting quaternion p' is in fact the sought-after rotation. But the reader can prove this as an exercise using the material on pg. 79.

Great follow up to Recon

Full disclosure - I received a copy of this book from the author at no charge, just a request for an honest review.

I really enjoyed Recon (The Fringe Book 1) and have been eagerly awaiting the release of this next book in the series. Harper is such a fun character to read, and I love her complicated relationship with the mercurial Eli. The evolution of their relationship feels very real within the context of their circumstances, and you can't help but root for them despite all of their increasingly tough odds.

The author does a great job of deepening the mystery surrounding the true nature of both the Compound as well as the people out on the Fringe. I like a story that draws you into the lives of the characters, and leaves you as mixed up by the details as they are. Exposure did this for me. I liked the personal growth exhibited by Harper and Eli as they each struggled to protect the other while fighting for their own survival in a number of very dangerous situations. The action in this book was intense and not gratuitous, which I also appreciated.

Final verdict - Exposure is definitely worth the read.

Terrific sequel and I can't wait for book 3!

**DISCLAIMER-I received an Advanced Readers Copy of this novel. However, after finishing, I also purchased a copy because I want to be able to support authors I enjoy so they can afford to write more of what I want to read!**

This book took everything that happened in Recon (Fringe Book 1) and upped it by another order of magnitude! More excellent plotting, dialogue, and characterization just like in Recon. A bit of a shift here, though, as a warning: A lot of the plot takes place out in the Fringe, so there is a lot of Eli and Harper. Sawyer takes the biggest leap in growth of all the secondary characters and I'm looking forward to see what she does in Book 3. One great thing that Benner does in her novels is to incorporate reality into her characters, scenes, and environment. Example: The fight scenes and description of the dead level-read the book!-and its concept and usefulness are terrific. If you read her afterword, you'll see that she isn't just making things up to suit her needs; she's done the research. A standout among post-apocalyptic/dystopia offerings, start reading this series now before all your friends tell you about the 'great new author' they found!

An Engrossing and Thought Provoking Realistic Dystopian Series

I Thoroughly enjoyed this perfect sequel to "Recon". I would rate this as my best realistic Dystopian series yet. The story builds up smoothly soon after where "Recon" ends. This book swept me into a whole other universe, I could identify with both the main character's feelings of pain, fear, sadness, desperation and happiness. The chemistry between Eli and Harper is tender, the suspense palpable and the plot absorbing. The story and her story telling ability were so intense and attractive that I had a hard time putting the book down.
If you enjoyed authors like Marie Lu, Veronica Roth, then Tarah Benner should be added to your favorite list. Thanks for a super written story.

The victorious allied powers wanted to annex the Ottoman territories and German colonies they had occupied; Woodrow Wilson and a groundswell of anti-imperialist activism stood in their way. France, Belgium, Japan and the British dominions reluctantly agreed to an Anglo-American proposal to hold and administer those allied conquests under "mandate" from the new League of Nations. In the end, fourteen mandated territories were set up across the Middle East, Africa and the Pacific. Against all odds, these disparate and far-flung territories became the site and the vehicle of global transformation.

In this masterful history of the mandates system, Susan Pedersen illuminates the role the League of Nations played in creating the modern world. Tracing the system from its creation in 1920 until its demise in 1939, Pedersen examines its workings from the realm of international diplomacy; the viewpoints of the League's experts and officials; and the arena of local struggles within the territories themselves. Featuring a cast of larger-than-life figures, including Lord Lugard, King Faisal, Chaim Weizmann and Ralph Bunche, the narrative sweeps across the globe-from windswept scrublands along the Orange River to famine-blighted hilltops in Rwanda to Damascus under French bombardment-but always returns to Switzerland and the sometimes vicious battles over ideas of civilization, independence, economic relations, and sovereignty in the Geneva headquarters. As Pedersen shows, although the architects and officials of the mandates system always sought to uphold imperial authority, colonial nationalists, German revisionists, African-American intellectuals and others were able to use the platform Geneva offered to challenge their claims. Amid this cacophony, imperial statesmen began exploring new means - client states, economic concessions - of securing Western hegemony. In the end, the mandate system helped to create the world in which we now live.

Susan Pedersen is Professor and James P. Shenton Professor of the Core Curriculum at Columbia University. She specializes in British history, the British Empire, comparative European history, and international history. She is the author of several books, including Eleanor Rathbone and the Politics of Conscience.

The Guardians by Susan Pedersen

In a time when the likes of Downton Abbey has taken the literary world by, well not storm so much as a long (suffering) sigh, this is a wonderful look at the period that gets tossed around fictionally a bit too much.

By this I mean that it seems that every Edwardian novel has to have WWI looming. Changing. Horrifying. Yet it comes off glib and the changes that took place after seem more in tune to making sure the heroine gets a job, bobs her hair and dances to ragtime.

I know true historians are probably clicking off this review by now. If you stay I can say that Pedersen is sharp and detailed and explores territory that I found fresh and yet substantive. This is a wonderfully close and personal look at the figures that helped set up the stage not just for the next conflict but also the more successful attempt to prevent a third.

It also looks at how the old guard and the emerging new guard saw the world and how it should, could and would change. And how it shouldn't, couldn't and wouldn't. These are larger than life individuals who alone could support a biography of interest. Bringing them together in one study though doesn't detract any and paints the larger picture with plenty of small detail. This is a historical study that reads as fast and sure as many fiction and shows why television and film often so much fails in capturing the fascinating elements that make history. And of course make history come alive.

For me it was a book that not only had me scrambling to see what Wikipedia had to say but also find as many old maps of the time as well. Many of the lines drawn and erased are what we still deal with today and reminded me how far we have come in some regards and how much we still think with a mindset that goes back a almost a hundred years when we think of nations what it means to define such -- as a member of one and as the outsider to the rest. As archaic as we might find some these fascinatingly drawn individuals by Pedersen, she is good at presenting them in a way that also lets us, sadly in some cases I suspect, identify with their ambitions and conceits.

Extremely infromative and very readable for the non-academic

Extremely informative and based on massive research of the Mandate Commision. It is well organized and and very readable for the non-academic. If had it to do over again, I would not , however, choose the Kindle version. I found accessing the notes in this book to be very inconvenient using my Kindle Paperwhite. This has not been the case with other Kindle versions I have purchased. Having said that, the book itself is a wonderful read.

The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen (and One Woman)

That the League of Nations was a spectacular failure (it dissolved in 1939 with the beginning of World War II) has blotted out its memory. A pity.

This new scholarly book argues that the league of extraordinary gentlemen (and one woman) partly made (mostly made?) the world we know today.

I love the author's voice. It is authoritative, ironic, tart. She is of the School of Edward Gibbon (no one will ever succeed him; none can ever replace him).

Pounce.

Professional Service Firm Manager? Read This Book

I run a professional services firm in the government contracting space for over a decade. I first read this when I founded the firm, but didnt take much of this to heart because the focus was more on startup. Now, as a mature professional firm owner and manager, I re-read it and found it invaluable. In fact, I have made this essential reading for all managers and up at the firm. Even if no one reads it, I know I have internalized it. The book has forever shaped my view of leading and managing a professional services firm. It would rank among the top 3 of all business books I have read, period.

Practical and very accessible

This text is a classic resource on the professional service firm, and as a consultant this reviewer appreciates the accumulated wealth of knowledge the author graciously decided to share. The content that Maister provides here is practical and very accessible, and consists mainly of articles published separately over a 10-year time period within such publications as "Sloan Management Review", the "Journal of Management Consulting", "International Accounting Bulletin", and "The American Lawyer". While most of these articles refer to professional service firms as partnerships, the vast majority of the material is still applicable to other types of firms, including the limited liability company (LLC). And the title might suggest a management audience, but the content is important for all associated professionals, including new associates. Because this book is so well written, this reviewer also recommends a reading by those considering work in this field, either those still studying at the university or those contemplating a professional transition. There is no other book quite like "Managing the Professional Service Firm", even though it has been over 15 years since its first appearance (1993) and a host of other texts have entered this space, especially after the late-1990s boom in consulting. The foundation of this book is the simplified mission statement that Maister indicates is the same, with varying refinements, for most professional service firms: "To deliver outstanding client service; to provide fulfilling careers and professional satisfaction for our people; and to achieve financial success so that we can reward ourselves and grow". Probably no coverage of this book can quite deliver justice to its quality. This reviewer set out to list several of the articles which they consider to be above and beyond the rest, but it was difficult to include all but just a small minority of the chapters. The strength of the content is slightly skewed toward the first half of the book, but strong articles persist throughout the 7 sections covering basic matters such as balancing company composition and profitability, client matters such as listening and marketing to clients, people matters such as motivation and scheduling, management matters such as strategy, partnership matters such as performance and compensation, and multisite matters. Highly recommended.

Excellent for Law Firm Managing Partners

I purchased this book out of sheer luck, by reading a review to law firm start up book that recommended professional services firm management books.

I am a East European Lawyer and feel empowered and enlighted when reading this book. Its style is user-friendly. In particular, I liked and appreciated the chapter on what clients expect from professional servicepersons.

I have not yet read all its chapters, but those I did, I read several times and each time new helpfull skills come to my attention.

As a lawyer, new tothis type of source of information, I was not expecting I could find such a book, of such a high quality.
