About the Author

Liz Beddoe is Associate Professor of Social Work at the University of Auckland, New Zealand. Her teaching and research interests include critical perspectives on social work education, professional supervision, the professionalization project of social work, interprofessional learning and media framing of social problems.

Jane Maidment is Senior Lecturer in the Department of Human Services and Social Work at the University of Canterbury, New Zealand. She has been a practitioner in the health sector and has researched and written extensively in the areas of field education, aged care and craft as a vehicle for social connectedness. Jane currently co-ordinates field education and teaches practice skills, field integration, and theory for practice.

A perfect 5 stars

The best and most enjoyable book I have read in years. This book is like a good French film, which in its focus on the everyday life of the main characters unravels the nuances of the local culture and psychology. I say French film, because the book reveals the culture and problems of Damascus and Syria though the conversations and actions of the characters in a way that feels believable and authentic, unlike other films that bludgeon the viewer with their message. In terms of style, skill in execution, interest in the characters, and revelations of culture, I give this book 5 stars. There are two excellent reviews about this book in the Guardian (the best of which is [...]). Oh yes, it's long, but it held my interest on two 9 hour flights. One of those books you don't want to end.

As a Syrian I discovered Rafik Schami when I moved outside Syria. This book was a pleasant surprise and a lesson.

Reader should first get use to the style. It is written in 1001 Nights, jumping from one subject to another.

The events are taking place in streets and cities I know, so beside the words, I could see the pictures.

Through this book I learned a lot about politics and Syria and things "you never mention" while you live there. Two months after finishing the book the apprising in Syria began.

Though covered with history the book is describing what was happening in Syria the last 40 years, and what resulted in the current apprising.

Good read, good school. And hopefully one day I will be able to shake hands with Mr. Schami in our beloved Damascus.

I love the book

The book is supposed to be "used", but it was absolutely brand new. In perfect condition. The story (stories) in the the book are sheer joy and entertainment. The book is very long and heavy and I find it hard to read it standing up in NY metro. So you have to read it while sitting or lying down. It is a great book.

They've given me less than two hours." For two hours, this famed Donne scholar takes center stage, interrupting her doctors, nurses, and students to explicate her own story, its metaphors and conceits. Recently diagnosed with late-stage ovarian cancer, she is being treated with an experimental drug cocktail administered in "eight cycles. Eight neat little strophes." The most powerful play I've seen/read in years

I bought and read the play after seeing it performed twice by Judith Light, once off-Broadway and once regionally in Washington, D.C. I believe one would find the play equally powerful without having seen it. Perhaps because Margaret Edson never had formal training as a playwright, no one told her what she "shouldn't" do, and as a result, Wit is a brilliant, searing, *unique* vision of how a woman's mind becomes sharper and more insightful even as her body deteriorates. The character of Dr. Vivian Bearing reminded me a lot of Maria Callas in "Master Class" (at least, as rendered on stage); both are strong, imperious characters who draw you into their confidence while challenging you to keep up. And it's a relief to find a play that doesn't talk down to its readers/viewers, and actually contains, for instance, a lecture on a Donne sonnet -- which, incredibly, moves the action forward. After reading or seeing the play, you feel emotionally drained but energized.
I'm both a cancer patient and a playwright, and I can only hope that I'm able to produce as eloquent and powerful a work as Margaret Edson has given us.

What Not To Do and Why To Do It Anyway

Playwright Margaret Edson does everything in this play that playwrighting and directing teachers tell their students not to do. She speaks in jargon. She breaks the fourth wall. She demands a hefty cast. She's digressive.
Yet the play, both in performance and as literature, is compelling. This play, in the great expressionist style, creates a world as seen through the eyes of only one character. Events unfold from a distinct point of view that is made comprehensible to us by allowing that POV to address us apart from stage events.
Edson, a literature graduate and former oncology ward worker, is knowledgeable about the topics that inform this play: classic poetry and cancer. The connection between the metaphysical lyrics of John Donne and the imminent mortality of uterine cancer provide a smooth harmony in the character of Dr. Vivian Bearing. Thematically and structurally, this play has the theatrical elements that make playwrights from Sophocles to Strindburg to Sam Shepard writers of great significance.
This isn't to say the play is easy to stage. Scene shifts take place without a pause to let actors get their feet. Our narrator gets a pelvic exam in full view of the audience. Supporting characters double on the fly, and lead characters have to change ages from scene to scene. At the final moments, our narrator appears in front of us as naked as the day she was born.
But these difficult elements contribute to the great meaning that is this play. Without these trials, the production wouldn't touch us in the same way. We need these almost offensive structural components to understand what the narrator must endure.
This play is difficult to read, difficult to stage, difficult to watch. Yet the things that make it difficult make it most ultimately rewarding. A modern classic from a forward-thinking mind.

Great play

Dr. Vivian Bearing is renowned throughout the literary world for her expertise on John Donne's seventh century Holy Sonnets. The professor enjoys teaching at the University, but not as much as she relishes a rational analysis of Donne's brilliant work.
However, the fiftyish Vivian soon learns that she suffers from late stage ovarian cancer. The University medical research staff provide her a rare opportunity to receive special experimental treatment. She soon finds herself feeling sicker from the "cure" than the disease even as she discovers that it is simpler to learn than to teach. As Vivian goes through the eight stage process, she begins to appreciate the Donne sonnets as simple works of art by a great metaphysical poet, and not just intellectual fodder to be ripped asunder by English teachers like her.
W;T is an incredible play that forces the audience (reader or attendee) to evaluate ones values. The main theme is brutally honest yet done in a humorous, thought provoking manner. Margaret Edson provides one of the top plays of the decade as it leaves everyone agreeing it deserved the Pulitzer it won. This play (in book or theater form) needs to be experienced to understand the emotions its generates. Great work by a master playwright.

About the Author

William Mendenhall was a professor emeritus in the Statistics Department and the first chairman of the department at the University of Florida. Dr. Mendenhall published articles in top statistics journals and was a prolific author of statistics textbooks.

Terry L. Sincich is an associate professor in the Information Systems Decision Sciences Department at the University of South Florida, where he teaches introductory statistics at the undergraduate level and advanced statistics courses at the doctoral level. He has won numerous teaching awards, including the Kahn Teaching Award and Outstanding Teacher Award. Dr. Sincich is a member of the American Statistical Association and the Decision Sciences Institute. His research interests include applied statistical analysis and statistical modeling.

Standard book. Not a great set-up.

The book is ok. There are plenty problems to work and some examples, which is great. I can't say that I am a fan of having to hunt for the problems though. Normally, all the problems will be at the end of a chapter. But in this book, the problems are at the end of each section. That kind of bugs me...

Loyal to one of the great books of the Bible

This is a wonderful retelling of one of the most profound gems of the Bible. Most tellings focus almost exclusively on the Whale portion of the story. But the real focus - the boundless love of God - is properly told here. The cadence of the poetry is attractive to young children. It is now one of the favorite books of our seventeen year old toddler!

Inexplicably popular with my toddler

My 18-month-old daughter can't get enough of this book; she carries it around the house, begging, "moh moh... jo jo", which is her way of asking for "more Jonah". Her interest wanes after the fish regurgitates our hero, and usually we then start over from the beginning. A single read is never enough, alas. I give this advice to all those in a similar predicament: partial relief from the tedium is had by singing the book's rhymes to the tune of "The ballad of Gilligan's Island." Try it, it works. Coincidence? I doubt it.

Life Changing Book

This is the best books I've ever read when it comes to transforming your mind. It's a book that you MUST take your time reading in order to digest all Bishop Jones is teaching.

If we could get more leaders to write books in this manner, we'd have less confused saints. I found myself writing down notes as if I was in a classroom while reading this book.

Things this book will do for you once you are done reading it.

1. Give you a better understanding of what it means to transform your mind.

2. Give you a better understanding of the Greek and Hebrew meaning of a word.

3. It will expand you vocabulary.....You will need your dictionary while reading this book.

THE BOOK WAS VERY INFORMATIVE. IT GIVES A VARIETY OF PHILOSOPHIES BY BIBLE SCHOLARS AND PHILOSOPHERS. IT OFFERS PRACTICAL INFORMATION ABOUT HOW TO APPLY THE WORD OF GOD TO YOUR DAILY LIFE. IT MADE ME WANT TO EXPLORE SOME OF THE BIBLE PHILOSOPHERS FOR MYSELF. I THINK IT WOULD BE AN EXCELLENT BOOK FOR THOSE LOOKING FOR ANSWERS TO THE COMPLEXITIES OF THE MIND. A brilliant analysis of "the ultimate power of transformation"

With regard to this book's title and to the model that Behnam N. Tabrizi proposes in this volume, it is important to note at the outset that he does not believe that organizational transformation can be completed in only three months. What he offers is a framework with which to formulate a program that, once implemented, may require 6-12 additional months (or more) to achieve the desired objectives. The proposed model has these characteristics: all-encompassing (i.e. "all aspects of the company, looking under all the rocks and leaving no stones unturned"), integrative (i.e. "various functions and processes within the organization" are synchronized), fast (i.e. "fully engaged in all [its] efforts in parallel, looking at everything at once" expeditiously), and have full, passionate commitment and buy-in, "especially at the top layers of the organization."

Tabrizi rigorously examines six companies that have used the 90 days model: 3M, VeriSign, Nissan, Bay Networks, Apple, and ACI. All of them proceeded through a multi-phase process. Here's the timetable:

Pretransformation (30-90 days)

Phase 1: Diagnosis (30 days)
Phase 2: Envisioning the future (30 days)
Phase 3: Paving the road (30 days)

Transformation implementation (6-12 months)

Of course, these are general guidelines and the timetable will vary among organizations that commit themselves to transformation initiatives and progress of such initiatives will also vary, once formulated and then implemented. Barriers are inevitable and some will probably be the result of what James O'Toole has so aptly characterized as "the ideology of comfort and the tyranny of custom." He correctly points out that "today's executives believe they are struggling with an unprecedented leadership challenge to create internal strategic unity within a chaotic external environment." This challenge is exacerbated by the fact that so many companies are now competing in what Thomas Friedman has described as a "flat world."

Of special interest to me is what Tabrizi has to say about envisioning the future during the second phase, in Chapter 5. "Now, it is time for the teams to shift their focus and start looking at solutions for [the problems previously identified]. Over the next thirty days, with [various] pain points in mind, the teams will work on identifying various alternatives for treatment and remedy" by following this sequence: cascading goals > creating a set of metrics > rationalization of key areas > developing a set of "big ideas" > gap analysis > ongoing organizational excellence > get an early start on implementation [i.e. "picking low-hanging fruit" > Day 60 integration meeting > tiger teams. Tabrizi carefully explains what each of the steps in this sequence involves, and, correlates the importance of each to the other steps that precede and follow it. Along the way, he cites real-world examples from companies that include Hewlett-Packard, Apple, Nissan, VeriSign, Telef�nica de Espa�a, Bay Networks, and The Home Depot. By the completion of Phase 2, teams will have "rationalized and streamlined their portfolio of products and services and used gap analysis of revenue projections...[and will have] developed their big ideas, which were recommendations shared with the EMT [i.e. executive management team] at the day 60 integration meeting. In some cases, new rapid response teams, called tiger teams, need to be created to address areas that have been previously ignored or overlooked."

Throughout the balance of his narrative, Tabrizi explains how to build on accomplishments achieved through the second phase so that those involved are well-prepared to meet the challenges that await them when they begin the 6-12 month process of full implementation. The model he proposes is not for every organization, as he duly acknowledges. Moreover, those organizations that that select it when planning and then implementing transformation initiatives must be sufficiently agile and flexible to make whatever modifications of the model may be necessary.

"However, it is only a matter of time before change is required again. The question then is, How do I continue to change before I have to? The beauty of the 90 days model is that it spins out an army of change agents with informal networks and experience working across numerous boundaries, and who have internalized change and the change process." Tabrizi then goes on to point out that, by creating an organization of change leaders that think outside the box, "the company will be better prepared to change in the future, fir employees will be less resistant and more experienced...Instead of being something to be feared, change becomes something that is empowering. Change promotes growth. And that is the ultimate power of transformation."

How timely and brilliantly written is this book in such an economic climate...for all leaders,managers,Ceo's of companies who are or will be undergoing transformation . It guides you in a detailed step by step path towards understanding the process of change and how to manage it with ease and speed to a successful result. It is a masterpiece. It will create a revolution in managing change in organizations. Every chapter offers several templates that you can use right away and in particular, the chapter on employing an all encompassing cross functional rapid response team is a must read.

This book should be mandatory reading for all business leaders and those in company executive level management who are trying to grow their businesses. The examples are very interesting and logical.
