Very, very wrong with the revelations of the Hillsborough Investigation, the Jimmy Savile Investigation, so many more and even 'Plebgate' when The Biggest Gang believed they were so powerful that evidence against Andrew Mitchell MP, a member of Her Majesty's Government left so many questions, which when answered were proved to be blatant lies. This book explains that such examples are not typical of a minority rogue element as being claimed but are a dishonest culture, born so long ago but allowed to fester and grow with the many examples and revelations which have continued until today with Plebgate and Hillsborough as only two shocking examples.

Entertaining But Appears Inflated

Hayes' books are entertaining overall. His claims of corruption in the Manchester CID appear to be generally corroborated by some cases (e.g. the conviction of Chief inspector Jack Butler in 1983 for attempting to pervert the course of justice and accepting bribes). His other claims of general police corruption seem a bit over the top, but perhaps that really is all he experienced. However, his recollection of the pay rates in his early police career are inflated by about 50% (so maybe his recollections of other things are similarly inflated).
His general assertion that all police officers in England were corrupt during his service (about 1963 to 1976) is unsupportable and unfair. On the other hand, his portrayals of most senior police officers as incompetent rings true.
Another criticism is his poor research of police history. For one small example, the graduate entry scheme was introduced in 1968 - well before Margaret Thatcher's tenure as Prime Minister. Another example is his claim the minimum height in 1829 was six feet (it was in fact only five feet and seven inches).

JAPANESE ROSE

Japanese Rose was an intriguing read to say the least.
Here is "what I assume to be a true story," about a young Japanese woman named "Sayuri Miyamoto" who disguised herself as a man and became a Kamikaze pilot during the later part of WWII. She actually flew her last mission but, was shot down pre-maturely, captured, returned to Japan and subsequently given a new identity so as not to embarrass the Imperial Japanese Army and it's Bushido codes.
As unique and unbelievable as this may sound, it apparently happened and, the events that lead up to this life-time crescendo are just as interesting to read.
There are numerous typo's, and spacing anomalies, but the story is damn good.
There are parts that seem a bit too over-dramatic and "mushy" reminding me of the events in the Movie, "Titanic" where a blossoming love affair grows between "Jack Dawson" and "Rose Dewitt".
There is a great similarity in the telling of this story with that of "The Titanic", except in this case, the vehicle that introduces this War time love affair is not a passenger ship, but... A Kamikaze training camp and eventual last mission .
There are many strands within this story and one cannot help but feel sympathy, and sadness for a couple so deeply in love caught within the webs of life's destiny.
Despite the numerous typos and poor editing...the book is very good and leaves the reader much food for thought. It is well worth the price... enjoy the story.

Lifting her head from her camera, through which she had been studying a model posing provocatively in matching bra and briefs, Lily recoiled instinctively from the scene in front of her.

Almost naked male and female models—the girls all fragile limbs and pouting mouths, some of them open in conversation, or drinking water through straws so as not to spoil their carefully applied make-up, and the boys with their gym-toned bodies—stood together as they submitted themselves to the attentions of hovering hair and make-up artists. Fingers tapped away on mobile phones, gleaming tanned skin contrasted with the catalogue client's underwear all the models were wearing for the shoot. Heavy beat music boomed out into the small space despite the fact that some of the models were listening to their own iPods.

In other words it was a normal chaotic studio fashion shoot.

'Has that last male model arrived yet?' she asked the hairstylist, who shook her head.

'Well, we can't hold the shoot any longer. We've only got the studio for today. We'll have to use one of the other male models twice.'

'I can spray on some dye that will darken the blond guy's hair, if you like?' the stylist offered, reaching out to steady the rail containing more underwear to be modelled as it swayed dangerously when one of the models pushed past it.

Looking around, Lily felt her heart sink. She had grown up in this world—until she had turned her back on it and walked away—and now she disliked, almost hated it, and all that it represented.

Given free choice, this cramped, shabby studio with its familiar smell—a mix of male pheromones, sweat, female anxiety, cigarettes and illegal substances that seemed to hang invisibly in the air—was the last place she wanted to be.

Edging past a chattering group of models to get to the door, she put down her camera on a nearby table and went to check the pose of the pretty girl with the wary charcoal-grey-eyed gaze, wondering as she did so how many young hopefuls had entered the industry imagining that they would leave with a contract to model in a top fashion magazine only to discover a much seamier side to modelling. Too many.

This kind of shoot was the unglamorous rump end of what it meant to work in fashion, and a world away from money-no-object glossy magazine shoots.

She hadn't wanted to do this. She was here in Milan for a very different purpose. But she had never been able to resist her younger half-brother's pleas for help and he knew it. Rick's mother—her father's second wife—had been very kind to her when she had been young, and she felt that it was her duty now to repay that kindness by helping her half-brother. She couldn't ignore her sense of duty any more than she could ignore all their late father had been.

She had tried her hardest to dissuade Rick from following in their famous and louche father's footsteps, but to no avail. Rick had been determined to become a fashion photographer.

Satisfied with the model's pose, she went back to the camera—only to frown in irritation as the door to the studio swung open, throwing an unwanted shadow across her shot, along with an equally unwanted suit clad male torso. The missing male model had obviously finally arrived—and ruined her shot by stepping into it.

Thoroughly exasperated, she pushed back the shiny swing of her blonde hair and told him, without removing her gaze from her camera, 'You're late—and you're in my shot.'

It was the sudden silence and the stillness that had fallen over the rest of the room that alerted her to the fact that something was wrong. Her senses picked up on it and reacted by sending a quiverful of tiny darts of anxiety skimming along her spine. She stepped back from the camera and looked up—right into the coldly hostile gaze of the man who had just walked in. A tall, dark-haired, broad-shouldered, expensively suited man, whose body language reinforced the same cold hostility she could see in his eyes along with proud disdain. Against her will Lily could feel her eyes widening as she took in the reality of the man confronting her, her pulse beating unsteadily against her skin.

Whoever this man was, he was obviously no model. Even stripped he would be… He would be magnificent, Lily acknowledged, her stomach suddenly hollowing out with a sensation that took her completely off guard. If asked, she would have said—and meant it—that she was inured to male good looks, and that as far as she was concerned sexual attraction was a cruel deceit on the part of Mother Nature, designed to ensure the continuation of the species and best avoided. She had grown up in a world in which beauty and good looks were commodities to be ruthlessly traded and abused, which was why her own beauty was something she chose to downplay.

Lily struggled to repress the feeling that made her shudder—as though against an unwanted male touch. She would never allow herself to repeat her mother's mistakes.

She was here to do a job, she reminded herself, not to give in to her own insecurities.

Whatever had brought him here to this shabby studio it wasn't the prospect of modelling work. His face might be as commanding and as harshly delineated that a hundred thousand ancient Roman coins might have been struck in its patrician and imposing image. It might be the kind of face that could lead vast armies of men into war and entice any number of women into bed. But it was a face that currently bore an expression of such cutting contempt that if it was captured on camera it was more likely to send prospective buyers running for cover than rushing out to buy what he was supposed to be modelling.

Was he going to say anything to break the pool of tense silence he had created?

Lily took a deep breath, and repeated determinedly, 'Yes?'

Another ice-cold look. The man must be close to inhuman, removed from the emotional vulnerabilities that affected the rest of the human race, not to be affected by the tension she could almost feel humming on the air.

His voice was quieter than she had expected, but redolent with the same power as his presence and grimly harsh.

The studio was in an old building, its door sturdy enough to block out the speculative questions Lily knew would be being asked by all the models and stylists inside it. She stood on the small landing at the top of the stairs that led to the studio, keeping as close to the door as she could.

At such close quarters to him there was nowhere to escape to—he was blocking her exit via the stairs by standing next to them.

'Call me old-fashioned and sexist,' he told her, 'but somehow finding that it is a woman who is procuring young flesh for others and profiting financially by doing so is even more abhorrent and repellent than a man doing the same thing. And you are such a woman, aren't you? You are a woman who lives off the vanity and foolishness of others, feeding them with false hope and empty dreams.'

Lily stared at him in disbelief. Revulsion filled her at the accusation he had made, accompanied by shock that he should have made it. The thought crossed her mind that he might be some kind of deranged madman—only to be squashed by the message from her senses that this was a man who was perfectly sane.

She pushed her hand into her hair a habitual gesture of insecurity and told him shakily, 'I don't know what all this is about, but I think you must have made a mistake.'

A Little Disappointing

Prince Marco di Lucchesi finds Lily Wrightington in the middle of a photo shoot, surrounded by scantily clad models, one of whom was supposed to be his nephew. He draws the obvious conclusion and his disdain for her is palpable.

Unfortunately, fate throws Marco and Lily together again, since he is the one designated to show her around some of the breathtaking palazzos of Italy. Marco tries to resist Lily's charms, but is puzzled by her apparent interaction with Anton, a man old enough to be her father. In reality, Lily lives in fear that Anton will make good on the threat he made to claim her innocence so many years ago. Is there nowhere she can be safe?

This story could have been a little better. At times, there was so much description that the storyline lost its luster. I could imagine a verbal contest of wills far more easily than the slow burn.

love Penny Jordan but......

I bought this book having seen the RT rating and am very disappointed. Neither characters motivations were believable and they both seemed so angst ridden they needed therapy not romance.both behaved in ridiculous manner unlike any real human would and the hero was not at all likeable. I loved Penny Jordan in the 80s but styles have moved on and I felt like I was reading a book written in the style current in 1978 not 2013. Read about half and couldn't go on so flicked to the end. Oh dear. What are the reviewers at RT thinking?

The hero was such a dud. Because of something that happened to him when he was 18, he decided on the spot to dislike and distrust the heroine. There was no real believable tension between them and yet they suddenly fell in love after almost no interaction or dialogue! Horrible!

About the Author

Tom Woolley is an architect and educator and self-builder. He has taught at the Architectural Association, Strathclyde University, Hull School of Architecture, Queens University Belfast, University of Central Lancashire, UiTM in Malaysia, University of Umea, the Centre for Alternative Technology in Wales, University of Bath and University of Gloucestershire. His research work and writing has covered housing policy, sustainable materials and design theory. He is active in the Co-operative party, ARC-PEACE and Scientists for Global Responsibility. He has helped to establish the Alliance for Sustainable Building Products in the UK. Working with Rachel Bevan Architects in County Down in Northern Ireland, he is also involved in organic gardening and sustainable woodland management.

Fantastic Resource!

As I was browsing through Amazon I found this book. I bought my copy last week and have pretty much been glued to it since! The lessons are really easy to follow and more importantly, put into practice!

I set up an Etsy shop a couple of years ago. After reading the chapter on shop names, I decided to make a total change. And the chapter on Photography really gave me some great pointers. I didn't realize just how important those pictures are. By the time I finished I had a totally redesigned shop.

The best part for me (and the reason why I bought the book to begin with) was the tips about promotion. It's always the part I hated the most, but this makes it so easy. I wish I knew two years ago when I started my shop what I know now. In fact, I'm going to try some of these tips with some of my other projects. This book is a great tool for anyone who wants to sell anything online.

Fun and Practical

This book was given to me as a gift and with a suggestion I could sell my wife's custom made greeting cards on Etsy. I've been thinking of opening an Etsy Shop for some time now, but felt slightly overwhelmed with the idea.

How To Sell Your Crafts Online makes the process of setting up an Etsy Shop nice and simple. The lessons are all short and easy to follow. Not short as in skipping vital info, but short as in not blabbering on about things you don't need to know. After you've read each chapter there's a number of action-steps which is a nice touch.

As well as setting up your Etsy shop, this book also shows you how to find your way through the online jungle. I now have a firm handle on how to use Facebook, Twitter and a variety of websites I'd never heard of before.

One of the best things about this guide is it never feels like too much work and each step is fun. The book is really well designed with bright and vivid illustrations and plenty of screen-shots so you know exactly what to do each step of the way.
So if you've been on the fence about selling your crafts online, or need to improve a slow online store then this guide is going to save you a lot of headaches.

This book is a must for artists and crafters who want to market their work on the web. Not only did it address how to use Etsy, but it also gave lengthy instructions to other sites and methods such as Facebook and blogging. Photography and movie making for YouTube is also covered. This book will be all I need to begin the online marketing end of my business.

Essential for anyone doing EEG

Although technical enough to not be taken lightly, this book should be read by anyone who wants to really understand what they are measuring with their EEG electrodes. College level physics, electrical engineering and calculus will be required to get much out of the book, and even then the going is slow. However, subjects such as cortical dipoles, temporal filtering and why EEG has a 1/f power spectrum all make more sense to me now.
I use EEG for neurofeedback and other quantitative medical applications. I recommend this book to anyone interested in EEG beyond the technician level. I give it four stars only because much of the mathematics is very technical and difficult.

This is an authoritative text on the basic principles of the human electroencephalogram (EEG), containing a wealth of valuable information that would be difficult or impossible to obtain from other sources. It should be of interest to scientists with nearly any background, ranging from physics and engineering to neurobiology and psychology. A remarkable quality of this text is that it is written to serve all these audiences well. Hard-core mathematical readers can be assured that these authors know their physics, and apply it aptly to not only EEG measurement technology, but also to the spatiotemporal dynamics of the cortical sheet. Another prominent quality is its rigorous consideration of the multi-scale nature of cortical anatomy and its dynamics, and a quantitative assessment of what aspects of human brain dynamic processes may be accessible with scalp EEG. In the main text, equations are stated without proof, and always explained intuitively. In this way, the book is quite accessible to non-mathematical readers, who can simply read around the equations and still follow the arguments. Indeed, this text is packed with "take-home messages" that neuroscientists would do well to keep in mind. The appendices provide mathematical derivations that are pivotal to arguments in the main text. By serving all these audiences so well, this text is a valuable resource for those interested in bridging the various subfields of human neuroscience. Insofar as EEG and MEG measure closely related quantities, this text is also essential for MEG researchers.

No Book Like It

While the first edition (1981) of this book was widely acclaimed, this second edition is substantially improved. As a clinical neurologist, I appreciate the author's relaxed conversational style when addressing the often subtle connections between physics and neuroscience, reminiscent of Feynman's famous Lectures on Physics. This approach brings together the physicist and neuroscientist and enlightens both. The material covers a broad range from brain waves (EEG) to basic questions on the nature of consciousness. This is a must read for anyone seriously interested in how the brain works.

This book is so delightfully comprehensive, all others will pale in comparison. Massive footnotes and fantastic bibliographical references included to make for an easy transition in investigating historical piracy. Must-read!

The classic, true stories of 18th century pirates. I agree with David Cordingly that the author (who used the pseudonym Captain Johnson) is NOT Daniel Defoe. It's still a great edition, illustrated with woodcut diagrams from the original version of the book.

After watching Black Sails I wanted to learn more about the pirates. This was good.

Very graphic violence when describing the carnage of canon fire but otherwise an excellent read. I really enjoyed reading the true stories of the pirates.
