By Marsha K. Stein
I have looked through the entire course and it looks to be fantastic. I'm not there yet; I purchased it early so that I had everything I needed before starting my first lesson. It's just a habit of mine. My kids are waiting for my first concert.... which will be private LOL! Thank you so much for writing a course that us older individuals can complete without having to find a person, arrange schedules, etc. This is sooooo much better :)

Great Books!
By AMZ JOHN
Great set of learning books. I purchased all 3 books and I think they are great. With any books like these, I do suggest using a teacher because sometimes its best to have someone critique you in person. For self learners, this book boosts knowledge with theory and has great finger exercises.

This book has helped my wife and I increase our piano skill. It is just full of songs which each have a different style.
By Engineer and customer
Amazing fun book. This book has helped my wife and I increase our piano skill. It is just full of songs which each have a different style. Every style of song is in this book. Each song increases in difficulty. The book teaches you a new key and gives several songs to help you learn that key.

Apt title - excellent intro
By Mike Tarrani
Although this is a college-level text, it can be effectively used by newly minted IT auditors to quickly learn the key knowledge and skill factors needed to function within their roles.
I like and highly recommend this book because of the emphasis on CObIT (Control Objectives for IT), which is the basis for auditing per the IT Governance Institute, which is, in turn under the aegis of Information Systems Audit and Control Association.
As stated by a previous reviewer, this book is wide in scope. The first three chapters cover the basics in clear prose and sufficient detail to give both students and on-the-job new practitioners all of the information needed to orient themselves in the role of an IT auditor. The emphasis on risk management in different domains is another strong point. The chapters covering risks associated with network and telecommunications, e-business systems, and system deployments are both technically accurate and portray realistic scenarios. Chapters 9 (Conducting the IT Audit), and 10 (Fraud and Forensic Auditing) round out the topic areas, leaving no gaps in the knowledge required to be an IT auditor.
The accompanying CD ROM has a software application to be used in conjunction with Appendix B case study. I did not work the case study, nor did I thoroughly exercise the application, so will refrain from making judgments about the usability or value of the application. The case study, though, was well put together and realistic, making it an ideal adjunct for class exercises, as well as working practicing auditors through real world scenarios.
For those new to IT Auditing in general and CObIT in particular I recommend visiting the following two sites: IT Governance Institute, ASIN B0001F8V14, and Information Systems Audit and Control Association, ASIN B00006BW74. You can paste the ASIN numbers in the Search box, select All Products and click the GO button to reach these sites. Once there you can explore additional material that will augment this book, as well as copies of CObIT, and an 84-page document titled 'IT Control Objectives for Sarbanes-Oxley', which is one of the hottest contemporary topics in IT auditing.

Up to date, encompassing textbook on IT auditing
By Ed
This is an up to date and good textbook on IT auditing. It begins with an overview of IT audit, legal and ethical issues, risks and controls and ends with a chapter on fraud and forensic accounting. What makes this book especially suited for classroom or self-study is the inclusion of discussion questions, exercises, notes and recommended reading lists at the end of every chapter.

The authors cover a wide field but on the same time manage to touch upon all important topics. COBIT, ISACA standards and guidelines are heavily used and referenced throughout the book, providing a good link between study and practice and perhaps making the book one of the preparation resources for the Certified Information Systems Auditor (CISA) examination. The book also includes a CD with ACL software and a sample auditing engagement, which may be useful in some cases, although it does cover only a fraction of knowledge presented in the book.

Overall, this book indeed teaches the core concepts of IT/IS auditing. This book exists in two identical versions: one is for the North American market, another is for all other countries, although the coverage is mostly limited to US and Canadian regulations and practices.

It mainly about Security Risk issues
By Bill Schlitzkus
As an example, in the chapter on IT Risks and Controls, the only discussion of data integrity is buried in a few lines in a section entitled Security Risk. The examples in the book are mainly about Security issues. Take the subject of data integrity on file transfers. I believe the only mention of the subject outside of Security concerns is a Figure on the OSI Model (Transport layer alone won't detect if a mixture of old and new files are erroneously transfered to downstreams). There is no mention of detection/recovery of skipping/double-posting transactions, error thresholds, data base consistency on no-posts, restart/retry logic, checking for count and amount mismatches, balancing using checkpoints, etc. An auditor I believe should be aware of these types of issues concerning data integrity even in a core concept book.

The No Breakfast Plan and the Fasting-Cure, by Edward Hooker Dewey

This volume is a history, or a story, of an evolution in the professional care of the sick. It begins in inexperience and in a haze of medical superstition, and ends with a faith that Nature is the all in all in the cure of disease. The hygiene unfolded is both original and revolutionary: its practicality is of the largest, and its physiology beyond any possible question.

About the Author
Dr. Edward Hooker Dewey was a physician ahead of his time. Ignoring the medical practices of his time, Dewey used his keen observational powers to develop a "no-breakfast" approach to health and weight loss. These universal principals hold true in every culture and in every age of man.

Gave me great ideas
By J. Cass
As a woman, turning 60 is creepy. You don't look 60, but you just don't feel like your old self. I personally need to lose about 30lbs. It's been a real struggle (young girls...if you think you're having trouble now, get it together. The 50's are coming and it ain't no picnic).

Somehow this book inspired me to re-look at fasting and it's benefits. When I was young I loved fasting. It made me feel energized and light. Helped keep me skinny. I didn't think I could go full fasting anymore. Food is just so delicious (another thing that changes with age) So a semi-fast was just the jump start I've been looking for. I do my own thing but this inspired me to really think what I could do to incorporate this into my lifestyle.
I'm now semi-fasting Mon-Tues till dinner. At dinner I eat a small meal of protein, usually grilled chicken legs or thighs. I can eat as many as I want but usually end up eating about 2-3. On Wednesday I start a regular diet of healthy foods and lower my calories to about 1200. I make an allowance for a weekend cheat meal with friends or treat like ice cream or chocolate. Come Mon-Tues, I start the fast again until dinner. On Wednesday mornings I weigh myself. So far in two weeks I've lost almost 7lbs.

Now remember, this book was written in England in the early 1900's and might sound a little crazy. But fasting and semi-fasting has been around since cavemen couldn't find a burger king. So this is a history book as well as a way to build knowledge about the body and disease. Newer books are out like Dr. Joel Furman's Eat to Live and Videos like "Sick Tired and Nearly dead", all are inspiring as well but they focus on their way of eating/fasting. there is also the Book by Beth Christian "Easy Alternative Day Fasting" also a good read and filled with ideas.

The difference for me? I took what I needed from all the information gathered in this book and made a lifestyle change I can live with. It includes semi-fasting days, diet days, and a few cheats for my occasional glass of wine or a treat. I'm willing to workout hard at the gym, but giving up pleasurable foods at my age just isn't going to happen. Been there, done that and I want to enjoy life not be a slave to it.

We all have to find something that works for us...For me, I never really felt hungry until late afternoons and was just eating because every other book tells you, you need to eat your biggest meal in the morning or breakfast. Three times a week I work out with a trainer at 7am. Because I never eat breakfast before working out, fasting hasn't affected my workouts. I wake up, go to the gym, come home shower and have tea or coffee, water and 4oz of fresh OJ, Lunch is water, Iced tea, 4oz OJ and sometime a bit of broth or miso. A snack, is more tea and if I really feel I need something a slice of watermelon. By dinner I'm finally hungry (true hunger) and eat 2-3 chicken legs or thighs. Sometime if I'm in the mood I'll try a grilled steak instead of chicken. 4 times a week at 7pm I have interval workout classes (think bootcamp) and I eat my protein at 5pm. I have more energy on my semi fasting days then I do on my regular eating days, most likely because I'm not weighed down.

So this book get's 5 stars because it inspired me to take a look back and do something for the future. It wasn't until some funny language came in that I even realized it was written in 1900. Like "(talking about a patients fast after three weeks) "he felt he should like some pigs' feet jelly." So Thress consumed two slices of the jelly and one piece of gluten bread, with butter. He say's he enjoyed it and felt well afterward. Do they even sell such an item anymore. Maybe on Amazon. lol Plus, you can't beat the kindle prices.

Intermittent Fasting, New Solution to Health, Copyright 1900
By Querulouse
First, I'll highlight a few quick facts that you can learn from reading this book. Next I'll cover some of the details and the science. Then, I'll connect it to topics of interest 114 years after the book was written and make my own subjective appeal to action.

Factual highlights from the book:
1. Doctors used to force-feed whiskey and cow's milk to deathly ill patients. They continued to do so in the face of vomiting and weeks and months of no improvement in patient condition. This was considered normal. (Not unlike modern-day prescriptions of high-carb diets for diabetics...)
2. Frequent food consumption is not needed to maintain mental energy or function. The brain functions beautifully in the fasted state. Later work on ketogenic diets confirm this, though the author fails to anticipate misguided theories of glucose as "brain-fuel." He notes awareness of 6 cases of improvements in epilepsy, a surprise to no one familiar with modern epilepsy treatment.
3. Eating in the absence of hunger is probably harmful, much more so in a state of illness.
4. Doctors are lousy at preventing and treating chronic disease, at least in America. 150 years after Dewey started his practice, little improvement is evident. As he puts it, the typical doctor "does no more to prevent bodily ailings than other people, and is just as liable to become the victim of bad habits."
5. Sleep is essential for the brain.
6. Morning hunger is (mostly) unnatural. (A "cultural disease" is essentially what he calls it, comparing those who "need" breakfast to alcoholics. His concept is similar to a common term today: "diseases of civilization.")

The author, a Dr. Dewey, appears to be writing from Pennsylvania, USA. His medical career started at the beginning of the Civil War, so he of course saw many deaths and was able to observe differences in treatment philosophy between doctors. This traumatic experience led him to believe that many interventions were useless and lacked good evidence of efficacy. He noted that similar outcomes were evident under wildly divergent treatment protocols, and thus came to doubt much of the conventional medical wisdom of his day. He particularly opposed harsh treatments (which he termed barbaric) that lacked evidence of efficacy.

The book is mostly a compilation of case studies, interspersed with commentary and anecdote. In the sixth chapter, the author recounts his own long experience with chronic indigestion and how he eventually applied the logic of fasting, which he had for years used on his patients, to himself. By skipping breakfast he discovered he had could ditch his Omeprazole (which hadn't even been invented yet) and was cured of his condition. He eventually came to believe that most or all chronic diseases could be prevented or cured simply by skipping breakfast. His patients reported improvement in many conditions, such as eyesight, hearing, headaches, immune function, sleep, asthma, sinus and skin ailments. He also came to believe that fasting would allow the body to heal itself from pretty much any disease, if survival were even possible.

His etiology of disease is dodgy. His thinking really predates modern genetics, so we should not be too surprised. Even so, he clearly fails in discounting the role of infectious agents, though he was obviously not ignorant of the importance of sterilization for something like surgery. His hypothesis is, essentially, that localized structural defects are the cause of chronic disease, and these defects are present at birth. Then, when the brain experiences stress or reduced energy, circulatory dilation ensues and debilitates those defective structures (sinuses, joints, etc.). He is probably incorrect to say that energy is diverted from the brain to the digestive system after a meal, but regardless, he is correct that meal timing is important for human health, and that sleep is critical for the brain's self-maintenance. He is definitely incorrect in calling epilepsy a disease of "surplus food." His contention that alcoholism is initiated in infancy by on-demand breastfeeding is absurd. While extended fasts are probably beneficial for many diseases, I know of no reason to believe, for instance, that pancreatic beta cells can be regrown in this manner, so Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus is at least one disease outside the scope of his proposed panacea.

Despite the scientific shortcomings, he correctly anticipated modern research into circadian rhythms, which confirm the hormone-disrupting (and other) effects of eating at inappropriate times. While he noted the importance of food timing and quantity, he mostly failed to note the importance of composition and quality. (Writing prior to the all-out industrialization of the food system, it is fairly unsurprising that his only dietary villain would be sweets like pies. He did restrict sugar for at least some of his patients.) He distinguished true hunger from the urge to eat, calling the concept "a new study in dietetics" and relating it strongly to timing of meals. Scientists have since then been able describe in much detail circadian/endocrine relationships and their effect on, among other things, hunger. Research on calorie restriction and fasting also align with Dewey's prescription of intermittent fasting. His lack of attribution to infectious agents, however, is stark, because they are now known to be involved in at least some chronic diseases, and inconclusive evidence is present for many others.

Dr. Dewey apparently endured much criticism from the doctors of his time. After 115 years, however, his basic hypothesis of meal timing has gained much scientific support. From personal experience, I can concur with another of his observations: it is very difficult to overeat when you only have one meal each day. While today's nutritional and medical experts continue to pursue a failed discourse of calories and overeating, you can avail yourself of an ancient solution to a contemporary problem. Time your meals in accordance with your biology and skip breakfast now. Intermittent fasting is not a fad, and it is not new. The book's prescription, "to give the stomach a long rest of sixteen hours or more," is healthy and in accordance with biology.

Finally, I'd like to muse on a quote from the book. "As an abnormal condition overweight has received a great deal of attention in the way of misguided effort to both prevention and cure. These efforts are such conspicuous failures that even the patent medicine man has not found his 'anti-fat nostrums' the happy means to fortune." Stunning words from only 114 years ago. Much scientific knowledge has been gained since then, but no miracle fat loss pill has been able to stand the test of time. For all our learning, where is our wisdom?

Read it for the prose!
By TJ
The science might be a bit dicey at times, but you can't argue with the author's experience. And it's great advice to eat only when you're hungry--we're seeing that today in the increasing popularity of "intermittent fasting". But the real pleasure of this book, which was written in 1900, is the old-fashioned and beautiful prose.

Decent but lacks real-world applicability and nuts-and-bolts
By Rod D. Swartz
This book provides a lot of background on e-marketing for someone who has little knowledge of marketing which is part of its downfall because it spends too much time on basics. What this book lacks is a detailed explanation of applicable material to prepare a person to create an e-marketing business plan and then effectively implement it with real world tools. Having read this book as part of an MBA program, I was disappointed at the lack of explanation on the process of connecting websites with social media with mobile devices, etc. Don't get me wrong, it touched on it, but I was looking for the nuts-and-bolts and this gave the view from 5000 feet.

Good book
By ClaudiaG_89
I am using this book for my e-marketing class, and I have to say it is "O.K.". It is a very interesting book, but everything in it is black and white (isn't marketing usually more on the flashy, and colorful side?). The statistics and information in the book is very old (2011 ish).
Altogether good book, and I think I would even buy it without having to use it for class

Ready for part 3
By fitgirl4ever
As long as part three is priced $5 or less I'll purchase it. The book was good but up felt some parts were not needed. Parts were added to draw the book out. Book could have been finished in 3 parts. I wish there was a way to find out if a book has more than 2 series. I miss the days of stand alone books.

Dust to side chicks literally
By Shanda
Nova. Nova. Nova. She was adamant about side chicks not breaking up homes and if so they had to pay... with their lives! No matter who you were. She turned into a beast. Aoki was all about ruining homes since she'd been a victim of it and playing a dangerous game that damn near cost her mom's life. Skye became a mistress feeling like she had the upper hand. These chicks were all going crazy and let's not even talk about the men... I'm anxiously awaiting part 3.

Great Resource for Practice Administrators Everywhere
By Ricky S. Dean
It is easy for phone service to feel overwhelming. The key in mastering the telephones is to control the telephone process, instead of letting the process control you. Woodcock and Keegan offer a wealth of tips and process ideas in It’s Your Call, a fantastic reference work for improving phone operations in your practice.

In a world where customer service is king and social media has led to a culture of almost instantaneous responses, the telephone remains a primary contact method. For the foreseeable future, it will be a growing part of your medical practice.

The authors cover the following material:
• How to measure your telephone calls
• How to manage your telephones
• How to staff your telephones
• Telephone tools
• Telephone systems
• Call centers

One of the best aspects of It’s Your Call has to be the “Best Practices” sprinkled generously throughout the book. Things like, “Call volumes can be reduced to twice your visits,” and “Hire staff with excellent customer service backgrounds and then train for medical terminology and medical practice operations.”

The authors were kind enough to include samples of documents that can be used for measurement and streamlining current processes or establishing new procedures more efficiently. Highlighting the most crucial points in text boxes and bold print makes it easy to locate key points and guides readers to the biggest takeaways from a content rich book.

What’s Missing
The book is not without its flaws and blind-spots, however, and here are the ones I found most glaring.
• Clinical calls are crucial
Physician calls tend to be the most expensive, time intensive of all telephone contacts in a practice yet there was very little discussion of ways to improve efficiency of these calls. Despite heavy discussion on the cost of callback, there is essentially no discussion on the most expensive calls and how to reduce those costs.
• Major Metrics
The tables and diagrams in “Measure Your Telephone Calls” are neat and tidy with regard to measurements, statistics, and documentation. However, the three most important key metrics are notably absent – first call resolution, mean time to resolution, and patient satisfaction.
• First call resolution
Handling issues on a patient’s first call is crucial to improving not only the bottom line, but also customer satisfaction. How many times do you want to call for assistance before you receive the answer you need? Whether you utilize low-tech solutions like paper and pen or high-tech tracking software like Healthdesk, it is crucial that you monitor first call resolution statistics.
• Mean time to resolution
If you call and leave a message, how long do you wait for a return call before you call again? Tracking the amount of time it takes to respond to a patient message can help you identify lag times that can be improved.
• Patient satisfaction
Do happy patients leave practices? Do unhappy patients stay where they don’t feel valued? No and no, so keeping your patients satisfied remains an important part of your practice’s success. Trying brief exit surveys, web-based surveys, or immediate options via phone or email systems can provide you with the information you need to gauge how effective your staff is with regard to patient satisfaction.
• Missing Change Management
Though briefly addressed, change management is not discussed in enough detail to provide effective solutions. A change management chapter would greatly help the practice administrators who are the ones typically tasked to drive improvements.
• Start at the top - with data
Gather as much data as possible to make your case for change and share it with management.
• Find champions
Many practices have at least one provider and a handful of nurses who really care about improving service. Make them your allies.
• Engage every level in goal setting and implementation
How is your team really doing? How do you best use the information you’ve obtained? It’s imperative to find a baseline and identify where you want to make improvements.
• Identify low hanging fruit
Hiring new staff or buying new technology may be the answer, but not the place to start. Try altering workflow in smaller ways to alleviate some of your areas of concern.
• Emphasis on some high price, time intensive options
The authors advocated social media as an education and communication solution. Social media is the way of the world these days, but it is constantly changing which means continuous training and updates for your team as well as the need for appropriate tech to use the platforms. While YouTube and other social media outlets could be a boon, without appropriate tech and training it could just as easily be a bust.
• Light on the real world applications
There are a few case studies included that provided insight into real world problems but there were not enough to have the impact It’s Your Call could have had. There is something about that real world application, that relatability of the “that’s happening to me” moment. Capitalizing on more case studies could have rounded out the content a bit more.
• Callback or not? Confusing recommendations
Woodcock and Keegan recommend transitioning inbound calls to a message + outbound call workflow. But then they also frequently quote the statistic that each message costs $15. This leaves the reader without a clear guideline for when and why to pursue outbound calls versus when to avoid them.
I understand the reason for this confusion. There is a trade-off with outbound calls that is a little technical to navigate. Taking messages and calling patients back has the benefit of being asynchronous. The patient doesn’t have to be assisted at that exact moment. In a world of call volumes that really spike, parking some calls for later really helps ease the pressure off the telephone staff and reduce the queues by letting them catch up on these calls when the volume is lower.
The trade-off is that retrieving messages and calling patients back, often with phone tag, normally takes a lot longer than it would have to resolve the issue at the moment. So you buy yourself some time to handle issues at slower times at the cost of taking longer per issue to do so. I would have liked Woodcock and Keegan to provide some guidance around this trade-off.

Why it’s Worth the Read
• Measuring your efficiency
It’s Your Call emphasizes the need to measure the efficiency of current procedures and data received from test calls to your practice to determine the overall effectiveness as well as areas for improvement. Further, practices are encouraged to include scheduling in your statistics (reschedules, cancelled appointments, missed appointments, etc.) to make certain no areas for potential improvement are missed.
• Convert anecdotes to data - don’t miss out on this crucial performance data.
• Measure reasons for calls, phone quality, and determine inbound call volume.
• Create phone expectation and share them with all staff.
• Try out some Mystery Patient Surveys and Patient Advisory Groups
• Educating your patients
Additionally, It’s Your Call discusses the need for patient education and suggests the best ways (hooray for Best Practices!) to reduce calls by providing appropriate information both verbally and in written form. Did you know that people only recall a small portion of what they hear? The amount of information retained from verbal instruction decreases when the individual is under stress. It stands to reason that providing your patient with written instructions to supplement verbal input gives them the option to review the information when they have clearer heads.
• Utilize all staff
It may benefit your bottom line to consider alternative systems that utilize your non-clinical staff. Breaking from traditional procedures for handling things like prescription refills can increase your overall efficiency. A good tip here is to hire staff with solid, even strong, customer service backgrounds and then train them on the medical aspects.
• Be proactive
When can you call the patient first? Take a hard look at opportunities to reach out to your patient before they call in to ask a question. One suggestion was to address time frames discussed with patients. If you believe test results will be back within twenty-four hours tell the patient you will let them know in two to three days. This provides an opportunity to account for delays and reach out to the patient before they call in.
• Do it right the first time
Reworking is not productive. Arrange time for physicians to handle calls every day so they can handle things that need to be addressed and avoid phone tag between staff and patients. Have front line staff attempt to solve any of the patient’s issues before passing them on, they might be able to prevent a transfer altogether with a simple “Is there anything I can help you with?”

Beginning with the basics of measuring and evaluating the effectiveness of your current system, It’s Your Call examines the behind the scenes strategies that can help improve your main line of customer service and ultimately your bottom line. The authors really nail down the most effective management techniques and how to properly train your staff and implement any changes as seamlessly as possible. There is even a healthy discussion on selecting the proper phone system and lengthy chapter on call centers as an option.

It’s Your Call is a wonderful resource and guide that breaks down some of the more crucial aspects of phone systems and procedures into simple terms while providing a wealth of Best Practice tips. It may not answer all of your questions or solve all of your issues, but it can set you on the right path.
