Natalie Wood was a Hollywood icon, beloved by millions for her performances in such classics as Miracle on 34th Street, West Side Story and Rebel Without a Cause. Married for the second time to actor Robert Wagner and the mother of young children, Natalie had everything to live for. Her bizarre death on or near the yacht Splendour on a chilly November evening in 1981 has been shrouded in mystery. In his recent best-selling memoir Pieces of My Heart, Robert Wagner told his version of what happened on the yacht Splendour on the night his wife died. But is Wagner's version accurate? Who knows the truth? Goodbye Natalie, Goodbye Splendour is the result of a decades-long investigation by journalist Marti Rulli and Dennis Davern, Natalie's friend, confidant, and captain of the Splendour on that controversial night. Painstakingly researched and written from the heart, here is an in-depth examination of Natalie Wood's life -- and death.

Finally! The Pieces Fall Into Place And The Questions Surrounding Natalie Wood's Death are Answered
By Catherine p LaViolette
I almost hate to say I love this book b/c at it's center is something so dark and horrible it's still hard to believe. Nonetheless, I really loved this book. Suddenly and finally, the death of Natalie Wood--how it came about, why and who was responsible--makes sense. Rulli took over a decade to gather information and write "Goodbye Natalie, Goodbye Splendour" and anyone who reads the final result will appreciate her diligence and patience. Similar to the death of Marilyn Monroe and other icons, very few people came forward in the days immediately following Wood's tragic death by drowning. No one had any information to add to or dispute husband Robert Wagner, co-star Christopher Walken and Captain Dennis Davern's versions of the evening's events. One of the few who DID say she thought she'd heard Natalie and men's voices the night Natalie drowned was threatened (some say by Frank Sinatra who was a great friend of the couple).
Over thirty years later, Wagner is in his 80's--retired and remarried, Walken finds no upside in revisiting events so remains mute, BUT the Captain who kept the secrets of that night has finally overcome his sense of loyalty to Wagner, fear, worries about upsetting Natalie's daughters, etc. and, once and for all time, has recounted in full the events of the night Natalie was murdered. I'd read the excellent book "Natasha: The Life of Natalie Wood" by Suzanne Finstad and she provides some of the same information Rulli gives out. Finstad, however, stops short of being definitive when she addresses Natalie's death. Rulli, on the other hand, has Captain Davern and years of research--including replicating the conditions of that horrible night--and her book, therefore, is able to pull everything together. And, no, there is no doubt about what happened, why and who was behind it.
Read this book if you have any curiosity whatsoever about Natalie Wood's death. I guarantee you'll be shocked by the attitudes of the police and detectives, the coroner's office, and even the "friends and family" of Natalie who must have suspected RJ Wagner's actions just didn't make sense. Did excessive drinking and popping Quaaludes and anxiety meds play a role in what happened? They certainly didn't help but at the end of the day, the actions of two people--and I'm including the Captain who could have saved Natalie but chose not to intervene at the time she needed him most--led to Natalie Wood's untimely, tragic end.

STICK WITH IT
By Stacey Brooks
I too do not believe anything Wagner has said....this is probably the closest we will ever get to the truth. I remember that weekend very clearly and I was very saddened by the news that Ms. Wood had died. I was always a admirer of hers. However, I must say that this book tends to ramble on about stuff that is not relevant to the story. I don't need side stories about peoples illnesses or divorces that are peripheral characters to the story. It felt like a lot of words trying to fill pages....I mean no disrespect Marti. This is the ONLY reason I gave it three stars. If the book stuck with just the story at hand, it would have gotten four stars. Having said that, I encourage you to stick with it.....or skip ahead a page or two. It's well worth it.

Chilling...
By Susan Williams
I read this right after reading the bio of Natalie Wood, "Natasha." It boggles my mind how these male celebrities just get away with foul play! Even if Wagner didn't push her off that boat, he didn't try to save her! Didn't report her missing for hours! Just unbelievable. And the "detectives?" Just let him go, hardly questioning him at all. It's all about money and celebrity. Just disgusting.
I do feel so badly for Davern. I can understand how tortured he was, trying to do what he knew was right, but not being able to because he was manipulated by Wagner. He was kind of young when all this happened, and he was friends with the Wagners, while working with them. Plus, he was thinking of how the truth would affect Natalie's children. He was a tortured soul. Those who criticize him shouldn't, because they don't know. He has done the right thing now, and I pray he has peace in his life now.
The book was a little "wordy", but all in all, it was well-written. Ms. Rulli did a good job and I could tell she is passionate about writing this book to present the true facts.
