About the Author
Diane Paddison has held several executive positions for corporations, including Chief Operating Officer for two Fortune 500 companies, Trammell Crow (now CB Richard Ellis) and ProLogis. She is currently the Chief Strategy Officer at the commercial real estate firm Cassidy Turley and serves on two other corporate boards, Behringer Harvard REIT Opportunity Fund II and Air Advice. She is also an advisory board member for The Salvation Army and Harvard Business School Christian Fellowship Alumni Association and a Trustee for Oregon State University. Diane is known for seeking opportunities to gather professional women for connection and mentoring time whenever she travels for business. This passion for mentoring women inspired her to found 4word™, a national nonprofit designed to connect, lead, and support young professional Christian women to fulfill their God-given potential (www.4wordwomen.org). Diane and her husband have four children, and they live in Dallas, Texas, and Portland, Or?

This book is about 10% "practical wisdom for professional Christian women" (as advertised) and 90% an autobiography of all the amazing accomplishments that Diane Paddison has achieved in her life. While amazing accomplishments, the practical wisdom offered is very surface level and is usually only a page length of advice, whereas the bulk of each chapter is an ode to her own accomplishments. Although she sometimes admits that her accomplishments are due to her upbringing and faith, the underlying theme is "look at all the great things I've done" with hardly any true acknowledgements to God other than the occasional on-the-surface statements like "my faith is what kept me grounded." Overall, the author seemed very self-absorbed. It seems like she simply wanted to write a book about herself and market it as self-help/Christian.

Let's see. ..my impression of this book was of someone who talked a lot about keeping balance while they lived a rat race life.
Bought it for my daughter in law. Read most of it first and ended up not giving it to her. Just felt the words and the life didn't match. Expected something different.

Realizations to a young professional

Work, faith, and family... the three important priorities in Diane Paddison's life, as she explains in her book Work Pray Love.
Paddison is a very successful Christian businesswoman who, in this book, describes how she arrived to her position professionally, and how she has carefully prioritized her faith and family needs alongside her blooming business career. As a woman who went to an ivy league business school in the 1980s, she was expected to put her career first; to do anything else would seem like a disappointing compromise after "getting so far" in the business world.
And yet Paddison thinks otherwise, in her own life as well as for other young professional Christian women, to whom this book is targeted. She explains that there are definite complications and compromises that arise when balancing the three, but her ability to articulate her priorities to her co-workers and importance of her career to family allowed her to flourish - by God's grace, provision, and blessing.
I haven't dug too deeply into the website yet, but Paddison's site, 4wordwomen.org, is for an organization she leads that connects young professionals and provides resources and encouragement that they (we) need to stay edified in these three areas - faith, family, and work. It's hard to believe we are a rather overlooked demographic in the church, but it's true.
This book was an encouragement to me as I read it for several reasons, 1. hearing the wisdom from a woman seeking God throughout her life, 2. realizing, as a published book, there are others who are going through the same thing, and very importantly 3. several realizations that came about, such as not fitting into any specific ministry at church, and how this is a shame, but still okay and leaves room for grace, and is not a reason to give up on church.
If this book is relevant to your stage of life, please enjoy a cup of tea or coffee and take it as a chance to relax while being encouraged and uplifted simultaneously.
