The year was 1898 and army private Patrick Henry Frank was in New Orleans awaiting transport to Cuba to fight in the Spanish-American War. A change in orders and Private Frank was instead going to the Philippines. Admiral Dewey had stunningly defeated the Spanish navy at Manila Bay, but President McKinley wanted boots on the ground. Patrick Henry Frank's country was seeking its manifest destiny further west than America had ever moved.
Through a riveting narrative history, author John Russell Frank chronicles the events of his family's half-century on America's frontier in the Philippines-war, adventure, colonialism, the heartbreaking deaths of family members, businesses ravaged by WW II, and internment in brutal Japanese prison camps. It is an epic story about his family's triumph and tragedy in a strange land, a story of how they came to absorb and become a part of another culture. The narrative flows from a substantial amount of intimate archival material: historically rich letters, war diaries, photographs, memoirs, and oral and video histories from the family's experiences in the Philippines. He shares a way of life and a time-period unknown or forgotten by the present generation-pivotal years of America's past. In the process, the author discovers his own roots.

Poignant Story of American Ambition
By Rebecca R. Sykes
This story of the last American frontier and how a young Texan with few prospects at home took advantage of the opportunities there is a compelling read. It is a story of entrepreneurial ambition, business savvy, love, war, courage and racial tension, all set in the lush Philippine Islands in the first half of the 20th century.
This chapter of our national history is not well-known by most living Americans, but we can learn much about American "nation-building" and about how World War II affected this remote and lovely place, with its complex racial mix.
The author, Dr. J. Russell Frank, writes very well and uses this story of his own family to define in a fresh way what it means to be American.

Fascinating history disguised as a personal saga
By ExPOW
As a person who spent the war years in Manila as a Japanese prisoner, I am an avid reader and a lecturer of the events that led up to the invasion of the Philippines and the consequences of the war. On the Road Home provided me unique insights on how the Philippine Islands came to be an American commonwealth and the loyalty of the Filipinos and sacrifices they made in support of the U.S. to defend their nation against the Japanese aggression. This is a true story and very well documented.
Instead of being a dry history, this family saga follows P.H. Frank as he joins the Army during the Spanish American war and is shipped to the Philippines as a private. After the Spanish surrender he remains in the Islands, and as a competent entrepreneur, builds several successful businesses, becomes a leader in the American business community, and raises his family. After being educated in the U.S., his two sons return to carry on the enterprises.
The Japanese invason in 1941 catches the two sons in Davao on the island of Mindanao, where they suffer as Japanese prisoners in a makeshift jail. P.H. is caught in Manila and is taken to the infamous Santo Tomas Internment Camp, where two years later his sons join him when the prisoners from Davao are transported there. The story tells of the deprivation in the camp and the jubilation of the prisoners when an American flying column liberates them, though they still have to survive a hostage crisis and Japanese artillery shelling.
I was unfamiliar with the history of Mindanao, and this filled a great gap in my knowledge. The scenes from Santo Tomas, though, were entirely familiar and I shared many of the experiences with P.H.'s sons. It is a great pleasure to read such an accurate portrayal of events, and proves again that true history can be more interesting than contrived fiction.

Great Story all Americans should read
By Nicholas J. Hubbuch
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book as it provides a look into what Americans faced in the Philippine Islands during World War II. The author captures your attention and this was hard to put down after beginning. I couldn't recommend this more for anyone who is interested in what this family had to put up with during the Philippine invasion.
