About the Author
Geoffrey A. Hirt is currently Professor of Finance at DePaul University and Director of Equity Research at Mesirow Financial. He received his PhD in Finance from the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana, his MBA from Miami University of Ohio and his BA from Ohio-Wesleyan University. Geoff has directed the Chartered Financial Analysts Study program for the Investment Analysts Society of Chicago since 1987. From 1987 to 1997 he was Chairman of the Finance Department at DePaul University and taught investments, corporate finance, and strategic planning. He developed and was director of DePaul's MBA program in Hong Kong and has taught in Poland, Germany, Thailand, and Hong Kong. Geoff has published several books. The sixth edition of Fundamentals of Investment Management was released in July 1998 and is published by Irwin/McGraw-Hill. Additionally, Geoff is well known for his book Fundamentals of Financial Management published by Irwin/McGraw-Hill. Now in its eighth edition, this book is used at over 600 colleges and universities worldwide, and it has been translated into Chinese, Japanese, and Spanish. Geoff plays tennis and golf, is a music lover, and enjoys travelling with his wife, Linda.

Online lab is a must with this book!

This book would have been too difficult to follow without the online lab that McGraw-Hill offers for an additional $49.99, so unless you are capable of learning this material without help, be prepared to purchase access to the lab which provides video lectures, practice quizzes, and more. With the lab help, I was able to complete this course with a 94%, but without the lab, I would have struggled to pass this course.

Buying this textbook

Be careful before you purchase this textbook. The book is available on the McGraw Hill Website as an ebook with access code for about $90. It is nice to have a hard cover book but my hard cover book came without an access code and therefore I have to pay an additional $40 to get the access code to be able to satisfy the requirements of my instructor. Further, I paid over $200 for the original book from textbooksrus.
The text is easy to read, has great motivational paragraphs and lots of online support if you have an access code.

Book is Helpful for Finance 101

This book is just fine for use in a Finance 101 course. Each chapter has learning objectives that clearly state what will be covered. The glossary has much of what you might search for, the index is precise, and there is even a company index that lets you know where in the book you can find case studies and real-life examples of finance practices. Finally, chapter 3 on Financial Analysis and Planning is particularly helpful; it provides explanations AND complete formulas for ratios in financial analysis.
Quick FYI regarding purchasing this book - if you purchase it NEW from Amazon directly as I did (and not a reseller), you are guaranteed to have the appendices for past and future values of money and annuities attached in the back of the book. Amazon is not to blame for resellers who don't include the appendix.
