From Publishers Weekly
Serving as a companion piece to DC's line of collectible "Bombshells" statues, this series reimagines several of the publisher's heroines with a 1940s pinup aesthetic and launches them into the fray of early WWII. The retro result manages to avoid the huge potential for offense thanks to the lively story from Bennett (Angela: Queen of Hel). Amazon princess Wonder Woman, Atlantean queen Mera, Supergirl, Star-Girl, Zatanna, and others appear in what amounts to a "gathering of the team" opening arc, and it's pretty entertaining. The story opens with lovely art by Marguerite Sauvage (Faith) that perfectly captures the vintage feel the series strives for; the remaining chapters intersperse Sauvage's work with that of several other serviceable illustrators. This entertaining female-centric adventure comes out of the gate quite strong but loses some visual steam after the first chapter. (Mar.)\n

This is a neat take on the All Star Comics from the
1940s, all women of course! Wonder Woman gets the Rosie The Riveter
treatment and I honestly love it. The Supergirl/Stargirl backstory is pretty cool
and nicely done. We get surprise appearances from one
Alexander Luthor, Amanda Waller and The Huntress. Batwoman is a delight and the Tenebrae
are pure evil. I hope this gets made into a DC Animated universe film.
Until then, absolutely looking forward to Vol 2!

What a great twist on some of DC's female characters
By Amazon Customer
What a great twist on some of DC's female characters. Set during WW2 Batwoman, Wonder Woman, Mara and many others are asked to join forces. A super natural force is rising and it will take all of them and more to fight it. The background stories for the ladies are really interesting, using parts of their usual histories and adding little twists and turns. As a Batwoman fan i couldn't be more thrilled with how she is handled. Highly recommend this for comic lovers and history lovers.

Has both potential and appeal
By Matko Vladanovic
Well, I’m not what you’d call an avid follower of ‘Elseworlds’ that’ve spawned all around during all these years. Heck, I can’t even be called a follower of main continuity titles anymore. In recent years my interest for this kind of entertainment has somewhat waned. I still revisit old childhood friends every once in a while, just to see if they donned their capes yet or they still fighting a good fight. It’s a visit more akin to those courteous family get-togethers than to anything else. There comes a time when you just have to let go, knowing that – as long as there’s money in it – Batman will never get rid of Joker, Harley will always be a loon (with varying degree of clothes on herself) and Gotham will never become a poster-child for environmental groups. No matter how you spin them, some things always remain the same. It’s a part of their beauty. Part of the reason they endured for all these decades.
“DCU Bombshells” revisits all your favorite heroes and puts them in a golden-age context. It’s WWII-time once again (only this time – it’s fictional), it’s an age of pin-ups and sassy young lasses, it’s a parallel (or alternative, let’s not nitpick) timeline in which there’s no Batman but Bat-woman (sporting a baseball bat in a ludicrous, so-bad-it’s-good visual pun), a timeline whose heroes are long-haired goddesses of J. Howard Miller variant. “DCU Bombshells” is their coming of age story. Mix of origin tales and full-bred, sometimes ironic, trial by fire. After all, it WWII and girl gotta fight.
So, apart from using everyone favorite heroes, main selling point of “DCU Bombshells” is visual revamp, which in this case is both iconic and reminiscent; highly functional in representing action-packed superhero comic-book, yet subtly nuanced in evoking period atmosphere by using postures, color palette and overall layouts. It’s quite cool, I might add, though it’s not entirely “streamlined”. Some collaborating artists on these stories are so much better than the rest so there often comes that moment of disenchantment in which apparent change of visual style (for the worse) pulls you out of the magical world of story narrative.
As for the story, there are few things of interest. Apart from this twist or that, or an occasionally inspired moment of creativity, much of it reads as generic storyline which relies too much on ‘alternative dimension’ to actually care about anything else. We’ve seen better takes on this (Gaiman’s “1602” comes to mind) but that again, we’ve seen mind-numbing idiocies which “DCU Bombshells” doesn’t really belong to.
The first volume is best described as fleshing out of the universe which has both potential and appeal. I hope that second volume will build itself from that. It would be shame if it didn’t.
